Photo of the Day: May 17, 2007

This seemed like the perfect light-hearted photo to get us through one more day until Friday. Flickr user zachstern has already proved his mastery with the infrared lens, but usually sticks to ethereal landscapes. This time he headed over to the zoo to capture the orangutans swinging madly in their Yeti get-ups. I have no idea what's trailing from his foot, but the whole image is a fantastic "what the heck is that??" EXIF.

Thanks DCist! This orangutan was carrying around a ripped open portion of a brown paper bag. When he sat to eat, he covered his face and head with the bag to keep cool and avoid the stares of annoying humans!
That is a cool shot.
I have a question: I've flagged photos for dcist many times, but they never show up in the photo pool. Is there something I'm doing wrong? (the photos are marked public, for what it's worth, and I have been able to search for them)
Thanks
You have to join the dcist group and add photos to the pool, then they'll show up.

Until I read the caption, I figured it was an old dog's chew-toy stuck on a clothesline. Well done Zachstern. Bizarre shot.
Thanks, SS, so do I have to "send to group" for the photo? Or is tagging it enough? (and do I have to retag them now that I've joined the group?)
Reid, you have to send to group - the tag is helpful, but if you want them to be added to the DCist pool, they have to be sent (individually, I believe?)
Reid, yeah, I believe you have to send each photo individually, there should be a menu at the top of your image where you can do this. You're also limited to 3 per day to avoid flooding the pool. If you've already tagged them, you won't have to retag them.
It's also helpful to tag your photo with whatever is in the image. For example, when we want a photo of the Smithsonian castle, we'll search for those tags within the pool (it's also helpful to keep it tagged "dcist", just so we can search "dcist, smithsonian" etc.).
If this isn't Monkey Erotica, I don't know what is.
do i have a retinal disorder or is that thing blue?
For my part, I find it much more convenient to find photos by just searching tags. Plus a lot of people who tag "DCist" don't send the photo to the group, so using the tags gives one a much wider "pool" (not to be confused with the actual Pool that one must send to manually) to choose from. So I don't really used the Group Pool at all when looking for photos...
Thanks for the help. How long does it normally take for the photo to appear in the pool once you send it?
As far as I know, it should happen pretty quickly...probably not longer than 5 minutes at the most.
If you keep having problems, you might want to post something in the discussion forum on the group page there. Someone there will surely be able to help you find the glitch.
I thought it was a wookie.
