Help Us Find Buffles (Updated)

gd58148_buffles_fluffy_bear.jpgAmong all the things that come across our neighborhood listservs on a daily basis, it's easy to become frustrated with living in the District. My local listserv, which covers the eastern end of Capitol Hill, has been brimming with complaints of roving gangs of teens, vicious unleashed dogs and drug dealers that move from block to block faster than the police can stop them. And that's just today.

But just recently a plea came over the listserv that both made my heart melt just a little and reminded me of the good that exists in all my neighbors (well, except that gang of teens; they suck):

Hello neighbors,

This is a long shot, but I thought it was worth a try. Our son lost his much-loved teddy bear, Buffles, on Friday, somewhere between the Air & Space Museum, La Lomita, and Potomac Avenue. We've checked with the museum, the restaurant, and Metro's lost and found, so far to no avail. If anyone has seen a beige Gund bear about 10 inches long, please let us know! We all miss him.

Thanks very much,

Jennifer and Mark (and Finn, who misses his Buffles)

We're told the bear in question is just like the one at right, only more worn around the edges. DCist readers, help us find Buffles.

Update: Apparently Buffles was almost found, or so we just heard:

Someone emailed me to report that she'd found a bear on Friday night on G Street between La Lomita and 14th Street. She put it on a rock wall on that block. Finn and his dad just walked over there but didn't see the bear. If anyone found a bear on that block over the weekend, please let us know! It could well be Buffles.
Keep your eyes peeled, guys.

If Monday Morning is trash time for that part of the Hill, ask the collection crew if they rescued Buffles the bear. Toy collecting is a trash crew perk. I've also seen a number of trash trucks with stuffed animals displayed on their front grilles.

This is ridiculous. Someone needs to teach Finn that losing a dear friend is just an important part of growing up.

The better questions is, how does one find this capitol hill listserve to join it? is there a neighborhood blog for capitol hill (besides that for "north capitol hill"??

oh what are they going to do when Grandpa dies? Prop him against the wall next to La Lomita?

My 4 year old went through this pain 2 years ago but by the next weekend had come to grips with it. We looked, sure, but creating good coping mechanisms to deal with loss is exactly the psychological footing that will keep him off drugs when real disasters happen.

I agree, loss is a part of life. So is learning about responsibility and taking care of your possessions. If Buffles is, indeed, found, I think the little boy should have to sacrifice it...that will teach him to lose something again! =)

Geez, you guys are cold. Yes, the kid will probably get over it if the bear can't be found - but what's the harm in trying to look?

Here's a couple of groups on Yahoo you may want to check out:

groups.yahoo.com/group/anc-6a/
groups.yahoo.com/group/capitolhilldc/

There are others too, Mother's on the Hill (MOTH) is the really big one, but it's quite intense. When we put Baby Rat in daycare and put up a post on MOTH about how our most excellent and reliable child care provider was going to be available, she had a half dozen interviews lined up in an afternoon. We got dragged to a couple of MOTH events by one of Wife Rat's co-workers and everyone was really nice, but just really stereotypical Yuppie parents and families.

As far as blogs go, for the north side of the Hill I would recommend frozentropics.blogspot.com

groups.yahoo.com/group/newhilleast is also a good one; very active and often entertaining.
