About Tonight

2007_0523_abouttonight.jpg>> The woman NPR crowned the "Queen of the Acoustic Guitar," Kaki King, takes the 9:30's stage tonight opening for the John Butler Trio. When DCist saw her play last year at Jammin Java, we were floored by "the wild, jazzy, and melodic 'voice' of her guitar." $20 will get you in the door for a great double bill.

>> The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay author Michael Chabon will be at the 6th & I Historic Synagogue to promote his new book The Yiddish Policemen's Union, which imagines an alternate history in which European Jews are resettled in Alaska after World War II. If you go, see if you can get him to confirm any casting decisions for the long-delayed Kavalier and Clay film adaptation. 7 p.m., $12.

>> It's your last chance to catch The Lady Vanishes, the best of Alfred Hitchcock's early, British films, at the AFI Silver theater. Pretty much THE template for a dozen other thrillers set on trains that came in the decades after. Part of the 50 Years of Janus Films series, 7 p.m.

>> There are two kinds of people out there: Those who loved Khaled Hosseini's The Kite Runner, and those who wanted to tear their hair out after reading it. If you're the former, head down to the Freer Gallery of Art’s Meyer Auditorium to hear him read from his new book, A Thousand Splendid Suns, at 7 p.m. If you're the latter, I'd personally like to buy you a beer.

I saw Kaki King at Jammin Java last year. She's fantastic.

Oh, then you can totally buy me a beer. I hated that dumb book.

what do people have against "the kite runner"?

Hearing all this talk of the new Chabon release makes me a little sad…

A year ago, I would have been thrilled and no doubt attended his book signing. He’s been my favorite author since I first read his debut novel THE MYSTERIES OF PITTSBURGH back in the early 90s.

But I can no longer support the work of an author who has no regard for the story and characters that put him on the literary map.

In case you haven’t heard, there’s a film version of MOP coming out later this year… Written and directed by the guy who brought us DODGEBALL, in which he’s CHANGED 85% of Chabon’s original story.

And the sad part is… Michael Chabon himself APPROVED of the script! WHY would he do this? I can only think of one possible answer: $$

If you are a Chabon fan, esp MOP, I suggest you do NOT see this movie. You will be sadly disappointed at the COMPLETE removal of the gay character, Arthur Lecomte, and the fabrication of a romantic love triangle between Art Bechstein, Jane Bellwether, and a bi-sexual Cleveland Arning. And really, what is MOP without the presence of Phlox Lombardi? Alas, she’s barely in it.
