Good morning D.C., and thanks for sticking with us. We realize that there may be some confusion about our legal status as a website in light of our failure, to date, to post the HD-DVD decryption key that 95% of the web seems to now be busy defiantly reproducing. Rest assured: we are still an internet website. As soon as we figure out a way to photoshop the 16-byte hexadecimal number into a picture of Marion Barry to hilarious effect, we'll jump on the bandwagon, too.
Fire Aftermath, Continued: There's no end in sight to coverage of the Georgetown Library fire. First, some good news: WJLA says that the damage to the collection isn't nearly as extensive as was initially feared. Things are wet and messy, but it appears that much can be salvaged. Regardless, NBC4 brings word that Rep. Davis is calling for an investigation into the state of the city's fire hydrants, citing their potential importance in the event of a citywide emergency.
Gates Supports Closing Walter Reed: Back in 2005 we were somewhat distressed when the congressional BRAC committee recommended closing Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Of course, since then new facts have come to light, and we're no longer quite as bullish about maintaining a facility that can't adequately serve the nation's veterans. We're not the only ones: Secretary of Defense Robert Gates has signalled his desire to see the base close as planned, according to WTOP. If things go as scheduled the facility will be closed in 2011.
Briefly Noted: Police seize twenty guns, swords, bows from apartment in Northwest... 20/20 piece on D.C. Madame likely to be disappointingly tame, despite new efforts to block it... Joan Baez stopped from playing at Walter Reed... A water main burst on 16th Street yesterday... Some MARC trains delayed this A.M...
This Day In DCist: One year ago we discussed Pitchfork's assault on Travistan and welcomed the Nats' new owner. Two years ago we considered whether you were likely to be reduced to irradiated vapor and talked to Laura Burhenn.

I think it gives you unlimited lives in Contra.
"God Save the Queen, she aint no human bein'
Made you a moron, potential H bomb."
The damage to the Peabody Collection has been minimized by the fact that there's a large refrigerated trailer parked on R Street, housing the collection and allowing it to s-l-o-w-l-y dry out without molding. Similar tactics have been used in similar archival incidents, to great success.
R Street is still closed to through traffic between 32nd Street and Wisconsin Ave, in case anybody uses said route as a cross-town thoroughfare.
When did DCist turn into slashdot? I feel like Rip Van Winkle here.
No, No, No.
The Contra code is:
Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, RIght, Left Right, B, A
How could anyone not remember that?
I don't understand the Walter Reed story -- the BRAC is law. It's not merely a recommendation by some powerless committee or temporary policy by the Pentagon. Which means, AFAIK, that unless congress passes a new law exempting Walter Reed from closure, it will be closed as scheduled.
David's right. However, that's not stopping folks like Vinegar Joe Lieberman from trying to keep the submarine base at Groton CT open. He's got a point in that there's no place else in the US that's outfitted to make submarines, antisub warfare, and mine countermeasures equipment like Groton. I'm sure Norton will make a similar pitch that Walter Reed is somehow essential to national security.
I thought Groton was out of the latest BRAC.
I believe it was "B, A, B, A".
While I also learned it as BABA, only one BA is required.
