Reader, Meet Author

Assault on ReasonTUESDAY:
Former vice president/rock star Al Gore will speak about his new book The Assault on Reason to a sold-out crowd at George Washington University's Lisner Auditorium. Don't expect An Inconvenient Truth, though; this is all about shrinking approval ratings for the president and Congress, not shrinking coastlines. 6 p.m.

Political journalist Michael Barone will speak about his book Our First Revolution, which is actually a reference to Britain’s Glorious Revolution of 1688, not the American Revolutionary War. Barone's referring to the fact that America's founding fathers were inspired by the overthrow of James II, which resulted in a Bill of Rights in Britain. Politics and Prose. 7 p.m.

WEDNESDAY:
Warehouse Theater will screen a 30-minute film on Atonement author Ian McEwan and his latest novel, On Chesil Beach. The film includes "interviews with McEwan in London, commentary from peers, critics, and fans, and on-location footage from the novel's setting." Following the screening, local authors Susan Coll, Keith Donohue and Thomas Mullen will hold a roundtable discussion. Event admission is free with the purchase of the book. 7 p.m. Just kidding! As a commenter pointed out, this event isn't until June 13.

THURSDAY:
A People's History of the Supreme Court author Peter Irons will talk about religion's uneasy relationship with the government, the topic of his new book God on Trial: Dispatches from America's Religious Battlefields. Olsson's Books & Records-Dupont Circle, 7 p.m.

We love Peru, so one story we never grow tired of is the search for Vilcabamba, the lost Inca capital. It's like something out of the Indiana Jones films, minus the Nazis. The Last Days of the Incas author Kim MacQuarrie will speak at Olsson's Arlington/Courthouse about the recent discovery of that long-lost location as well as the Spanish conquest that drove the Incas to hide deep in the rainforest. 7 p.m.

The English Patient author Michael Ondaatje reads from Divisadero, his first novel in six years. Politics and Prose, 7 p.m.

SATURDAY:
The first 250 kids to show up at Olsson's-Penn Quarter will receive a free paperback copy of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, courtesy of The Washington Latin School and Olsson's. One book per child. Sorry, adults. 12 to 2 p.m. while books last.

The Secrets of Wildflowers author Jack Sanders will give a presentation at the United States Botanic Garden Conservatory Classroom on wildflowers found in the Northeast. Registration required. 1 p.m.

Just to clarify, the Ian McEwan event isn't tomorrow or next week, but Wednesday, June 13, right?

Don't worry Matt. My wife and I went downtown on Friday night for dinner and a Guerilla Film Fest showing, only to find out that the movie isn't until THIS Friday.

Thanks for the headsup, Noelle. A mistake like this is bound to happen after a long weekend.
