>> This week's big event is, of course, the 15th Annual Capital Jazz Fest at Merriweather Post Pavilion, which begins today and runs through Sunday. As is the norm for this event, the lineup is heavy on the smooth jazz and R&B tip, but it also incorporates some more challenging artists. Highlights include Herbie Hancock, Anita Baker, Al Jarreau, Ramsey Lewis, and David Sanborn. Visit the event's web site for the full schedule, and tickets are available through the Merriweather Post web site.
>> Tonight, local native Ravi Joseph (pictured) performs at Twins Jazz. Joseph was named winner of the 2006 Keter Betts Memorial Jazz Scholarship and is currently a student at the University of Miami's Frost School of Music. This up and coming talent has a bright future and will be playing with bassist Joshua Bayer and drummer Greg Holloway. Visit the club's web site for more information.
>> Jazz has always been open to music from around the world. Though not a jazz band per se, Kantara brings its unique blend of traditional Appalachian and Tunisian music to the Millennium Stage on Thursday. The 6 p.m show is free and open to the public.
>> The Westminster Presbyterian Church features live, straight-ahead jazz every Friday through its Jazz Night in Southwest concert series. Admission is $5 and and there is no fee for children under 16. Visit the web site for more information and a complete schedule.
>> Legendary guitarist Pat Martino comes to Blues Alley this weekend for a three night stand. In 1980, Martino underwent surgery as the result of a nearly fatal brain aneurysm. The surgery left him with amnesia and without any memory of the guitar and his musical career. With the help of friends, computers, and his old recordings, he made an amazing comeback and continues to be a trailblazing musician. Sets are at 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. Visit the club's web site for ticket information.
>> Continuing the world music theme, Bossa Bistro and Lounge features various live salsa bands every Saturday night. It's well worth the $5 cover to hear some incredible music and watch great dancers do their thing.
>> Also on Saturday, CC Booker III (pictured), an organ centered soul jazz outfit, visits Twins Jazz. The band, which is influenced by the likes of Ray Charles, King Curtis, and Booker T & the MGs, is sure to provide an evening of funky grooves. Visit the club's web site for more information.
>> On Monday, jazz vocalist Kathy Watson pays a visit to Blues Alley. The Baltimore-based singer has been garnering positive notices with her original material. Visit the club's web site for more information.
>> Later this week, DCist will preview a series of concerts by up and coming talent Melody Gardot. This 23-year old singer/songwriter/guitarist will perform on the Millennium Stage next Tuesday. The show begins at 6 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
