This Week in Jazz
>> The funky sounds of New Orleans come to the Wonderland Ballroom tonight with Yamomanem. The music starts at 9 p.m.
>> It may come as a surprise, but some of the most innovative jazz in the world is now coming out of Norway. The scene's music is known for its fearlessness and avant-garde sensibilities. The Zanussi Five, led by bassist Per Zanussi, is one such group and they are making a stop at Twins Jazz this Thursday. Visit the club's web site for more information.
>> Latin jazz legend and Grammy winner Eddie Palmieri (pictured) comes to Blues Alley Thursday through Sunday with daily 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. sets. Check out the club's web site for ticket information.
>> This Friday and Saturday, woodwind player Anthony E. Nelson leads a band at Twins Jazz. His band will consist of altoist Julius Tolentino, drummer Tyshawn Sorey, as well as local heavyweights Allyn Johnson on piano and Kris Funn on bass.
>> Antonio Parker, a well respected local saxophonist, will be at HR-57 every Friday in June. Doors open at 9 p.m. and the music runs from 9:30 to 1:00 a.m. There is a $12 cover.
>> The 12th annual Takoma Park Jazz Festival takes place this Saturday at from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Jequie Park. Every year, the festival adopts a different theme, with these year's being "Body Music: Soloists without Instruments." The lineup features champion yodelers, whistlers, and tap dancers. A highlight of the festival is always the winner of the annual Jazz Band Brawl. This year's winner was The Oscillators(pictured), who will perform at 5:05 p.m.
>> Journeyman percussionist/vocalist Vinx comes to Blues Alley next Monday. This performer has toured and recorded with the likes of Sting and Cassandra Wilson, so his one man show should come alive in this intimate setting. Sets are at 8 p.m. and 10 p.m with a $20 cover.
