Photo of the Day: June 8, 2007

Photo by {ryan}

Long exposure night photography is a tricky thing. Flickr user {ryan} kept his camera's shutter open for nearly three long minutes to catch the light trails from the cars on the George Washington Parkway. Like the commenters note, the yellow curve sign makes a crucial focal point, pulling together a photo that required a lot of elements to come out just right. EXIF.

Just a reminder, to have your photos considered for Photo of the Day or for use on one of our many posts every day, please add them to the DCist photo pool. We also appreciate it if you would tag your photo "dcist" along with whatever else appears in the photograph, which makes it easy for us to search for subject specific images when we need them. The pool is restricted to three photos a day, and we also ask that you refrain from tagging more than three a day, to avoid overwhelming the group. In fact, you're more likely to see your photo on the site if you submit only a few per day or week, rather than throwing 50 photos in the pool once a month. Just a tip! We continue to appreciate all the folks who help us illustrate what's going on in Washington, D.C. every day.

Brilliant photo (literally). I love that the curve sign is perfectly mirrored by the long-exposure lights tracing the road. Awesome.

Always great photos on this blog...

How do you add photos to the pool? Do you only have to tag it "dcist" or do you have to do something more?

Alli, besides tagging "dcist," you have to join the "DCist Photos" pool (www.flickr.com/groups/dcist/pool/) and submit through there.

Yes, like Phil said, first you have to join the group...should be on the right side, down the page here:

www.flickr.com/groups/dcist/

Then when you click on one of your pictures that you'd like to add to the group, you'll see a menu bar just on top of the image. The second one from the left should say "send to group." It's a drop-down and you'll check off which group you want to send it to.

Just a snag I know a few people have run into: if you just created a Flickr account, it usually takes about three days after you've uploaded over five images for Flickr to approve your account. Not until then will your photos appear in the group or when searched by tags.

Thanks!

Thank you Heather. Thank you Ex-Hy Hy. I think the biggest challenge was just to find a time that the GW parkway was moving fast enough to make this actually work.
