Tuesday Sports Bits

GUTS.jpg>>The story of Bobby Boswell's ill-fated Nickelodeon GUTS appearance is well documented, thanks to some tremendous coverage from Dan Steinberg at The Sports Bog. It wasn't until yesterday, however, that we received indisputable video evidence of the incident. BobbyBoswell.com has the goods. The key quote from the clip: "I'll be honest with you. I scored a goal against Chelsea, was an MLS All Star. I was the defender of the year and just recently named to the Best XI. None of that can really touch me standing on the podium as a silver medalist for GUTS."

Hurling_Ball_and_Hurley.jpg>>The D.C. Gaels got a landmark victory this weekend, beating the Philadelphia Shamrocks 0-12 to 1-5. The victory was their first against the Shamrocks. What the hootenanny are the D.C. Gaels? Turns out that they are a competetive hurling team. From what we can tell, hurling combines elements of field hockey, lacrosse, baseball, and Austrailian Rules Football. There's a clip on the Gaels' web site that gives you a better idea of the game. According to their Development and Recruiting Officer, they're "always looking for new players", so if you're feeling the need to hurl feel free to shoot them an email.

>>Benny Olsen's magnificent volley, his third goal in United's 4-2 win over NYRB, is nominated for the MLS Goal of the Week. Be sure to give him a few clicks, as he is in a dead heat with Houston's Stuart Holden for the award.

Hurling in DC? Who knew? I saw "hurley" played in NYC's Fort Tryon Park when I was but a yoot. Don't miss it if you can.

I actually saw the Boswell GUTS ep a few months ago on the Nick GaS channel. It was pretty sad performance on Bobby's part, but he did dominate the 'Crag...

Not too surprisingly, hurling is somewhat popular in Boston. I've seen people walking around with hurling sticks up there. Seemed like a sport designed to knock out at least three of your front teeth.

The Gaels also have sponsored a camogie team for women; they won the "B" nationals a couple of years ago.

And actually, Reid, the sticks aren't all that hard; they are dried-out ash so if the stick hits you it doesn't hurt all that much.
