Pants Trial Judge to Give Verdict Next Week

2007_0614_pants.jpgThe trial has finally ended, and Judge Judith Bartnoff said she would issue a decision next week in administrative law judge Roy Pearson's $54 million dollar suit against Custom Cleaners, but the Post's Marc Fisher reports that Bartnoff has already given a clue as to how she will likely rule.

After listening to Pearson argue for hour upon hour that he was somehow protecting the interests of all Washingtonians by using the D.C. consumer protection law to punish Custom Cleaners for allegedly losing a pair of his pants, Bartnoff said: "This is a very important statute to protect consumers. It's also very important that statutes like this are not misused."

WTOP's Neal Augenstein reported that defendant Soo Chung, who owns and operates Custom Cleaners with her husband, cried on the stand yesterday as she described how her family has suffered "economically, emotionally, and healthwise" due to this lawsuit.

Should the verdict be in favor of the Chungs, their attorney Chris Matthews told WTOP he expects Pearson to appeal. Any legal analysts out there in blogland able to venture a guess as to how much this litigation has cost District taxpayers so far?

Anyone know who we can write, or call, to strongly request this particular "gentleman's*" judgeship isn't renewed?

*The term "gentleman" is a subsitution for a more descriptive term to avoid potential litigation with "Mr.*" Pearson.

Maybe the judge should be given an ethics hearing by the DC Bar Association - like a certain North Carolina prosecutor?

this has cost taxpayers a hell of lot less that a stupid, politically motivated prosecution on marion barry for blowing a .02 on a breat test.....

Yet he couldn't even walk straight and refused to give a urine test. hmmmm I'm sure he was completely sober. Leave it up to a DC jury of his 'peers' to acquit him. The guy belongs in jail.

Judge Roy Pearson’s Ex Files Suit Against Him Claiming World Was Never “Rocked”

In a cruel twist of fate Roy Pearson, the man who filed a $54 million lawsuit against a dry cleaner who lost his pants, now finds himself on the defensive. Pearson’s former girlfriend Melissa DeLoach has filed suit against him for failing to live up to his own lofty guarantees of coital performance.

“Quite frankly, my client feels duped,” said DeLoach’s attorney, J.D. Shuttelworth. “There were certain copulatory promises that were made by Mr. Pearson that simply never materialized. This breech of oral contract, so to speak, has left my client distraught. Compensation is in order.”

That compensation, $75 billion dollars, is to defray the pain and suffering that DeLoach claims never came into being as a result of Pearson’s lackadaisical effort.

The suit makes the following contentions:

* Although he did get slightly “jiggy-wid” Ms. DeLoach , Mr. Pearson never in fact “rocked her world.”
* Despite Mr. Pearson’s repeated claims to the contrary, Ms. DeLoach was never able to see her deity during intercourse.
* Mr. Pearson made repeated, mockingly rhetorical questions that insinuated that Ms. DeLoach does not know who her father is.

Is this really costing the city anything?

That is, the only D.C. resources in use are a judge, a bailiff, a court reporter and the courtroom. With the possible exception of the court reporter, the others are on the city payroll already - Judge Bartnoff is a salaried judge of the District of Columbia, and the courtroom in Moultrie courthouse is just sitting there, either in use or not. This is not a criminal prosecution - there aren't city provided attorneys idling away their hours.

So it seems like the only real expense is time lost to other litigants in other cases. The only other possible expenditure I can see is time spent by Pearson preparing his case rather than hearing administrative cases - and surely there's a mechanism for dealing with that.

Am I missing any other possible sources of D.C. money?

Jim: Other DC costs include extra security at the courthouse to handle the scores of reporters and news crews, webmaster time to remove any trace of Roy Pearson from the award-winning DC eGovernment site, and cost of delays for DC citizens now that there is one less working Administrative Law Judge.

Entertainment value: priceless.

yeah, from my perusal of DC government Web sites I'm going to assume that Webmaster is only part-time.

Is there really extra security? How far out the doors can the security line snake?
