About Tonight

2007_0619_abouttonight.jpg

>> There's a great, free Caribbean-themed outdoor concert tonight on the Kennedy Center's South Plaza Stage from 5:30 to 9 p.m.: Wyclef Jean, Shaggy, Jamaica’s The Ska-talites, and Richmond's jazz-funk outfit Plunky & Oneness. The show will go on rain or shine. Bring lawn chairs and blankets.

>> Assuming the predicted thunderstorms late tonight don't block the view completely, you might want to dust off that telescope and see if you can spot the Space Shuttle Atlantis, the International Space Station, or both some time tonight or early tomorrow. The Shuttle undocked from the Space Station this morning, and will appear to be leading it across the sky in a northwest-to-southeast trajectory.

>> Tuvan throat singers the Alash Ensemble are at Warehouse Nextdoor tonight with Marshall Allen, Elliott Levin and purported other guests. $8 p.m., $15.

Speaking of Caribbean events, tonight there is a FREE CONCERT featuring, from the twin island republic of Trinidad and Tobago:

TCL SKIFFLE BUNCH STEEL ORCHESTRA: A twenty-five member steel orchestra; and

MUNGAL PATASAR AND PANTAR: A fusion of Afro- and Indo-Trinidadian cultures, blending steel drums and sitar.

It is at the Lincoln Theatre at 1215 U St. NW, tonight at 7:00 PM and is FREE!

Take advantage of this opportunity to experience music from Trinidad and Tobago, and after you're hooked, join us at the DC Caribbean Carnival on Georgia Ave (between Missouri and Euclid) this Saturday!

Illinois playing at the Rock & Roll Hotel promises to be a good show.

Illinois playing at the Rock & Roll Hotel should be a good show. Their new EP is excellent.

Sure, Wyclef Jean, Shaggy, The Ska-talites, and Plunky & Oneness were great--much fun was had by all, to be sure.

What wasn't mentioned in any of the pre-event press (that I saw, anyway) was the act between Shaggy and Wyclef--Jimmy Cliff. Yes, Jimmy Cliff.

Wow, really? It seems like he must have been a surprise guest. That's awesome, I really wish I had been there. Got any photos?
