Capitals to Debut New Threads

newcapssweater.jpg

The particulars were leaked a while ago, but that doesn't make it any less sweet: the Capitals are unveiling their new jerseys tonight, and we have to say that they look fantastic. The style of the new sweaters mimics certain aspects of their traditional jersey (worn from 1974-1995), such as the solid red base and the emphasized hockey stick as the letter "t". Though bloggers Uni Watch gave the Caps a mixed review for their new threads, we're going to write off their criticisms as the nitpicking of a self-confessed typography geek.

The official unveiling will be tonight (6:40 p.m.) at the Kettler Capitals Iceplex, upstairs from the Ballston Common Mall. Set to coincide with the NHL draft, the party sounds like a ton of fun, but alas -- it's been sold out for quite a while. For inquiring minds without tickets, Comcast SportsNet will be covering the event.

What do you think? Do you approve of the new jerseys as we do, or do you agree with Uni Watch's criticisms? Let us know in the comments.

Thumbs up!....Hopefully the Nationals will do the same when the new stadium opens.

Is this the full time jersey or just a third jersey?

I always thought the new (now old) color scheme was atrocious. Now hopefully the Wizards will follow by going back to Les Bullez.

now they can suck in style!

The new ones are 100 times better than the previous version, but not nearly as nice as the original.

Agreed. The original design is 100 times better than this new one and a million times better than the previous one.

the new design is terrible. i was willing to accept a return to red, white & blue colors, but just taking the old logo as well and sprucing it up a bit is boring and lazy. the "throw-back" trend is so cliche right now i can't stand it anymore, but that's a different argument. i liked that the previous jerseys had a real logo instead of "team name with stylized font." thumbs down.

The design seems a good one, at least in red. There is no third jersey yet for this, FYI. The Caps want to concentrate merchandise sales on regular home and road unis first.

Look again! The new design is wonder mix of old and new and...what's this? The three stars of D.C.'s flag are right there in the logo! Awesome.

@Cary O'Reilly:

According to the Caps, the three stars are, technically, supposed to represent DC, MD and VA, rather than the stars on the flag. Although I'm going to continue to live in my little fantasy world where they were smart enough to do it your way.

Ice breakers, goal shakers, the Caps!

I LOVE IT.

Trying to look like DC United. Not a bad idea.
