Buffy Fans Can See Musical Once More...With Feeling

It's time to dig your stakes out from under your beds, Buffy fans.
Those of you who thought deep love for the series was dead should have known better. After all, Buffy creator Joss Whedon is the man who turned a beloved but hastily canceled TV sci-fi western into a feature length sci-fi film. As we learned in the fifth season, Buffy never really dies.
Throughout the country, fans of the Scooby gang will band together for Rocky Horror-style midnight late night screenings of the Buffy musical episode with a serious cult following, "Once More With Feeling". Costumes and singing-along are encouraged. And if our predictions are right, the Avalon theater will be absolutely packed July 20 and 21 at 10 p.m. with everyone who thinks Anthony Stewart Head's voice is unnaturally sexy. That is, if they can find time in their geek schedule that weekend between anime conventions and Harry Potter parties.
Any artistic endeavor that rhymes, "She eats these skeezy cheeses that I can't describe" with "His penis got diseases from a Chumash tribe" deserves eternal support.

Making this overlap with the Harry Potter release is criminal. Is this the first time the screening has been done in DC? I know some people who have worked on the screening at the IFC in NYC and I have always wanted to go.
Oh this is awesome. I may go if even just to see the people in costume. We could line up a bunch of Spikes and take photos!
As far as I know, Hoodrat, but I may be out of the loop. Yeah, I have friends who have attended the monthly events in NYC.
Wow! This sounds just like Rocky Horror, except, like, not sucking.
Anyone know where I can get a copy of Anthony Stewart Head subbing for his brother Murray in the musical "Chess?" Love to hear Giles' version of "One Night in Bangkok."
You and me, both, monkeyerotica. I remember in college I did track down Head singing "Sweet Transvestite," but that's about it. I'm hoping the DC musical theater scene comes to the conclusion that no, "Chess" really isn't completely Cold War-dated, and stages the show. I've only seen it in concert form!
The Avalon shows are at 10pm which should be perfect for attending Harry Potter parties immediately afterwards. Coming up with a costume that works for both could be tricky.
Thanks, Karon. Noted in the article.

Can someone explain the appeal of Harry Potter to me and why is this Buffy episode such a big deal; isn't the whole series available on DVD?
*sigh* I bought the soundtrack to the musical about a month or two right after the episode originally aired. It really is brilliant song writing. F*cking horses couldn't keep me from going to the showing in July.
And yes... I am single.
hillrat - All the Disney movies are available on DVD as well, yet people continue to see them in theater revivals. That particular episode has got some catchy tunes, and the Buffy contingent is always looking for some shared community experience outside comic book and plushie conventions. You'd be surprised how many Buffy fans are also plushophiles. Don't ask me how I know. Let's just say I'm not allowed in the soft toy department of FAO Schwartz since the...unpleasantness.
As for Harry Potter, you got me. Never warmed up to the stuff. Seems like it's been done better elsewhere.
We love our pop culture...Live and on DVD.
Hairspray
Rocky Horror
(Why not throw in 'Mommy Dearest')
Please. I went to a Sound of Music sing-a-long, I obviously have no bottom threshold for public humiliation.
In a clean, musical way, of course.
I remain baffled as to why folks choose to form a community around a TV show, but I guess the appeal of my hobby is equally inscrutable to those who don't play.
Bunnies. Bunnies. It must be Bunnies!
...or maybe midgets.
If only we can dig up enough enthusiasm for the musical, 'The Apple', then all will be at peace with the world.
I love the Buffy musical, mostly because it so adeptly juxtaposes brilliant, cheery funny lyrics with an incredibly bleak and depressing story -- everyone lies to those closest to them, and life may not be worth living, but it's all we've got. Of course it must be seen on a huge dark screen; repeated dvd viewings can only get one so close to the essence.
Oh, and there's a video of ASH (and some audios) singing RH songs on:

Once More With Feeling is the finest hour of TV ever. It's the best episode of Buffy, which is the best that TV has ever produced. Brilliant the way that it's the literary climax of Season 6, which is so bleak and sad. All of the amazing plot developments stem from what happens here.
I've watched this episode maybe 20 or more times, and can always watch again. But not at one of these kind of events. Just can't do it!
According to the Avalon's website, the time has been moved to 11:30P and the tix are now on sale, at the Avalon box office -- $12. (http://www.theavalon.org)
