Morning Roundup: Looking at the Sun Edition

Good morning, Washington. It's hot again out there today, with highs expected in the upper 90s, and folks in the city are understandably getting a little hot under the collar. Take Duane Stillions, who ABC7 reports was attacked by a pit bull on July 4 while walking his two small dogs. One of his dogs, Molly, a ten-pound Bichon Frise, is hospitalized in intensive care at a cost of $1,000 a day, and Stillions is considering legal action as well as raising noise about tougher penalties against owners of dogs who attack. Currently, D.C. statutes on dog attacks are somewhat vague regarding negligence of dog owners.
Reinoso Vote Delayed: Via the Post, today's confirmation vote on the deputy mayor for education, Victor Reinoso, has been delayed by D.C. Council Chairman Vincent Gray. At last month's hearing before the Council, Reinoso would not confirm who plagiarized large parts of the school takeover proposal from a school district in North Carolina. Today is the last legislative session this summer for the Council, and Gray, who said that he and other Council members have doubts about Reinoso, now plans to put the vote on the September agenda. Reinoso would be automatically appointed with passive approval if the Council does not vote by Nov. 22 -- but it would be big blow to Mayor Adrian Fenty if they choose not to act on one of his most important nominations.
Police Boundaries Could Change: D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier is looking to change the boundaries of between the 2nd and 3rd Police Districts. Dupont Circle, some of the U Street corridor and part of downtown would become part of the 2nd District, which includes Georgetown and Cleveland Park. The idea is to ease the caseload on the 3rd District, which receives 21 percent of the city's emergency calls, as compared to 5 percent for the 2nd District.
Briefly Noted: Audit yields hidden equipment and supplies inside shuttered schools ... An off-duty U.S. Capitol Police officer was involved in a shooting near Union Station, MoCo sees small drop in homeless population ... Four counts against MPD detectives thrown out.
This Day in DCist: In 2006 we hailed the arrival of the Pedicab to D.C., and noted the outcomes for local chefs in the Iron Chef America challenge.

Yes, penalties should be stiffer for people who have these dangerous dogs that they cannot/do no control. My family and I were in Haines Point earlier this year and had to pass a woman a boy attempting to walk two pit bulls. Neither of them was in control and I was terrified that we would be attacked.
The Lavatory Lady
To add insult to injury, Duane Stillions was cited in contributing and participating in a dog fight and for not having his dog nurture. Michael Vick was not available for comment.
That shooting occurred in the 1200 block of 5th Street NE, more in the neighborhood of New York Ave--Gallaudet metro than Union Station. I don't think it's fair to say there was a "shooting near Union Station."
Well, thank goodness it's still safe to go to Union Station. Unless you're a lovelorn homeless guy with a gun, that is.
Wah Wah, the people in the Pallisades where no crime serious crime happens are worried that vital police resources will be diverted away from doing traffic stops and shoo-ing away people a few shades darker than off-white. Color me not sympatheic.
To be clear: when raised properly and not abused (that is, "trained" to be aggressive), pit bulls make great dogs. That said, no one should have a dog they can't control, and anyone who abuses a dog to make it more aggressive and participates in dog fighting deserves a very, very long jail sentence.
OK I asked this yesterday and nobody responded: why are there UK specific ads all over DCist nowadays? I'd love to get Sky TV and stay at a Georgian Inn in Heffordshire, but I don't think either is very likely.
I don't have a dog in this fight, but ABC7's Julie Parker describes a "greyhound-pit bull mix" and the bigger dog was with "a dog-walker" -- we don't know if he/she was trained professional. Just sayin'.
Hey Reid, I honestly haven't been seeing the same ads as you, so I'm not sure what you're talking about... but like always, all I can say is that someone else is responsible for the ad buys on the -ist network, so your guess is as good as mine.

The only thing that bothers me about it is that it got me thinking I could get SkySports for a few minutes. I was just curious what causes the mixup.
