Weekly Music Agenda

2007_0723_Silverchairband.JPGMonday

>> Canada’s post-punk four piece Uncut just released their latest album Modern Currencies in the U.S. on July 17th and will be at DC9 tonight with special guest Patrick Krief of The Dears. Just like their name says, they are raw: loud, bold, and off the wall. Check out the stopmotion animated video for their recent single, "Darkhorse" which includes a fire bombing Ronald McDonald and an army of pissed off Care Bears. 8p.m., $8.

>> They claim to sound like "Herbie Hancock had a love child w/ John McLaughlin, while trippin with spider monkeys in Sri Lanka." Their album Blueberry Cave was this year's Independent Music Awards winner in the Winner of the Album- Jam category. As we mentioned last week, San Francisco’s Garaj Mahal is bringing their jazz-funk tonight to Blues Alley. 8p.m. and 10p.m., $20.

Tuesday

>> It’s a throwback to 90s grunge with Silverchair’s first full North American tour since 1999. The Australian alternative rockers who brought you "Tomorrow," will be at 9:30 Club in support of their new album, Young Modern, with We Are The Fury. $20.

>> The New York Times said her "flamboyant guitar approach also connects it to the ornate, virtuosic traditions of progressive rock and heavy metal: genres that punk once aimed to vanquish." Marnie Stern (pictured below), the girl who played this year’s SXSW with only her ipod backing her up, is now accompanied by an actually live band and will be at the Rock and Roll Hotel with openers Zulu Pearls. 9p.m., $10.

Wednesday

>> The summer music festival season heats up and a whole slew of bands will be out tonight at the Merriweather Post Pavillion for the Vans Warped Tour. You can get the line-up here, but be sure to check out New York indie rockers Straylight Run, with former Taking Back Sunday member John Nolan, who just released their latest album, The Needles The Space, and the more hardcore sound of Scary Kids Scaring Kids, who will be releasing a new self-titled album out this August. 11 a.m., $29.75.

2007_0723_marniestern.jpg>> He is a virtual one-man symphony. If you have yet to catch Ben Folds live in one of his solo shows, you are missing out on a powerful must-see performance by the now Five-less solo piano man. He’ll be at the Verizon Center tonight with John Mayer, and James Morrison. 7 p.m., $49.50/$59.50.

Thursday

>> Local acoustic singer/songwriter Justin Trawick has the quick smart lyrics of Jason Mraz and an addictive storytelling ability that crosses multiple genres. He’ll be stopping by U Street for Solly's Tavern’s songwriter showcase with Josh Himmelsbach, Malonius, and Jim Dempsey. 8 p.m.

>> Some people call him the space cowboy, some people call him the gangster of love. You can call him whatever you want at Wolftrap this Thursday night. Pack up your choice of food and drink, find your spot on the lawn and hope for minimal humidity as the classic Steve Miller Band performs with Norton Buffalo. 8 p.m., $45/$25.

Friday

>> Former Three Stars band New Rock Church of Fire know how to have a good time. Well, as long as your definition of a good time is a "July-o-ween" themed costume party at the Rock & Roll Hotel, with three bands, a costume contest, drink specials and more. Which ours is. $8, 9 p.m.

>> Wake up and get ready for the weekend with some in your face southern metal rock. Arkansas’ RWAKE, has just released their latest album, Voices of Omens. They’ll be at the Velvet Lounge Friday night, but you can check out the video for their single "Leviticus" beforehand to see what you’re getting yourself into.

>> Three Stars alum Welbilt is now offering personalized recordings of your favorite tracks that the band has played in the past at one of their shows burned onto a disc, included in the purchase of some of their merch. You can sample the goods tonight live at Ned Divines in Centreville. 10p.m.

Saturday

>> Chicago based instrumental rockers Pelican just got back from Europe and are now touring the U.S. to promote their latest album, City of Echoes. They’ll be performing their nature-themed tracks at the Black Cat on Saturday with Earth, and Priestbird (formerly Tarantual A.D.). 9p.m., $12.

>> Come out to Dr. Dremo’s tonight for a benefit concert to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Music by the winner of New York City's 2005 Irish Rhapsody Festival, O'Tasty. 8:30p.m.

Sunday

2007_0723_foundryfieldrecor.jpg>> Aussies both kick off and end this week in music with a Sunday night show at Galaxy Hut. The Sly Hats, described by some as "a meeting of Nico, The Clientele, and The Beach Boys," are getting some attention for their new album Liquorice Nights. Also on stage will be Guy Blackman, a Melbourne-based solo pop artist specializing in electric piano ballads. 9p.m., $5.

>> The Foundry Field Recordings have shared the stage with bands like Spoon, Dresden Dolls, The Rosebuds, and Deerhoof. Tonight they’ll be playing their shoegaze art-rock on H Street at The Red and The Black. $8.

To the author, just figured I'd let you know that I checked this blog a few times today waiting for the weekly music agenda.

Y'all (all y'all?) do a great job with this, and I for one look forward to it each week.

A few tips and clues that maybe ain't so loud yet. Tegan and Sara are going to GWU's Lisner auditorium in a few months. They've been selling out smallish venues everywhere way before show dates, so figured this might help you or another reader if ya want to see em.

Also, I think you guys or Chicagoist posted 'bout Rilo Kiley at the 9:30 Club in September, but if not...
