Fugazi Reunion is a Hoax

2007_06_07_KYEOcover.jpgIt's happened before and it'll happen again: rumors of a Fugazi reunion began swirling around the blogosphere today.

Rumors are all over the place that Fugazi will get back together for one final show to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their first show, which was documented in Instrumental. The show is supposedly taking place at the Fort Reno Park in Washington, DC on Monday, September 3, 2007.
We even got caught up in the excitement ourselves, imagining exactly what kind of picnic dinner would constitute a Steady Diet of Nothing -- for about five minutes that is, the time it took for Amanda from Fort Reno to email us back. Here's what she said:

IT IS A HOAX. apparently it was up on wikipedia this morning and my brother took it down but its been popping up on folks' blogs all day.

The whole thing seems to have started due to the planned Sept. 3 release of Keep Your Eyes Open, an absolutely real book of photos of the band by Glen E. Friedman, which we wrote about earlier, and in fact speculated (or more like wished) about the possibility of a reunion show in conjunction. Sadly, our hopes and these latest rumors haven't panned out. Sorry, kids.

Who cares? This band had one good song and 20 years of Ian Mackaye being an ass to audience members.

FVCK!

Can somone please tell Ian MacKaye not to wear his socks up to his knees? Thanks.

guest [3]: You're concerned about his fashion. You must be an indie rag concert reviewer.

i have no idea who fugazi is.

-the so not hip dc dawg

A band don't owe me shit, but the sheer fact that ol' Ian has deigned to bless us with his musical talents doesn't mean I have to be so grateful that he is beyond criticism. He is a well-known primadonna who will use any excuse possible to show how clever he is, usually by putting down others.

Ass or not, he was at Fort Reno last night.

Indeed, Fugazi is waaaaay overrated. This isn't to say they aren't a good, maybe even great, band; but the non-stop verbal blumpkins bestowed upon them by syncophantic fanboys gets a bit tiresome.

I think REPEATER is an awesome album but I could never get into Fugazi overall. A big part of it is Guy's vocals, which irritate me like nails on a chalkboard. Anyway, the real notable thing about Fugazi is their ethical stance, which considering the temptations that have been dangled in front of them are nothing short of iron-clad. Thank Ian for that; no matter how many people claim he's sanctimonious and preachy when he performs (though I for one appreciate not getting kicked in the head when I go to a show), nobody can deny the righteousness of his scene-oriented, grass roots approach of the past 25+ years. This is why you see him at Fort Reno week after week.

But all in all, I prefer Dag Nasty.

Perhaps a [sic] after "Instrumental" is needed? Methinks the reference is to the movie Instrument.

I think a large amount of credit can go to Ian and the Dischord set in general for demanding their audiences to step up and just be better. Which I think is one of the reasons that stuff like Fort Reno still exists.

I think this is the real disconnect between Punk and Go-Go scenes which at their core, are very similar. I don't know why there has to be so much violence at Go-Go shows, but I've always suspected because that type of behaviour was generally looked down upon at hXc shows. Hardcore shows were never without violence, but it was directed in a way that was less menacing. It seemed like it was more about exertion than control.

I have never seen nor heard Ian say anything to an audience member who wasn't being a total jerk. The biggest case in point came from Guy, actually, where some racist skinheads got ice cream from the truck before the show at Ft Reno, then started saying some racist, anti-gay stuff, anti-woman stuff, then proceeded to be total jerks to everyone else-bumping and hitting people. Guy lets loose with his "ice cream eating MFs comment."

I have never, in my 25 years of going to shows, seen Ian say ONE thing to someone who didn't deserve it, wasn't making a jerk out of themselves or hadn't angered just about everyone else around them.

That is EXACTLY why punk bands have lasted in DC while they turn into strung out disasters in other cities.

"That is EXACTLY why punk bands have lasted in DC.."

Really? Punk bands last around here? Still? Are you sure...?
