Washington Rated Top Email Addiction City
Via the Examiner, we learn that a new ranking put out by Dulles-based AOL places Washington, D.C. as the "most email addicted" city in the country, beating out the likes of Atlanta, New York, San Francisco and Houston, which all placed in the top five. The prevalence of mobile email devices such as Blackberries and Sidekicks in the city was attributed to the result, as well as the large number of government employees, most of whom are required to have more than one email address. Eighty-two percent of Washingtonians who responded to the survey reported they had more than one email address, which frankly seems low. Who are these 18 percent who only have one? Perhaps they're counting children under 12 and the elderly.
Switched has the full results, which show a number of other hilarious statistics, including that four in 10 D.C. residents say they keep a PDA by their pillow when sleeping to listen for late-night emails, and that 58 percent of us admitted to checking e-mail with a portable device while sitting on the toilet. If that's the case for you, consider this a blanket ban on describing that last activity in the comments.
The AOL/Time Warner newsroom has also published some tips on how to tackle "email addiction", such as organizing your email into folders, using your away message more often to take a break, and picking up the phone whenever your email correspondence with a person on the same topic goes back and forth more than three times. What's a phone, again?

Of course DC is the most e-mail addicted, seeing as so many govt. employees are required to carry their Blackberries (and no, I will not rape proper grammar just to preserve branding) around at all times. My housemate calls hers a "leash". Who wants to have their boss' whip within striking distance 24-7? Not me.
Gmail on the other hand... it gets me through the work day.
How are they defining "DC resident" here? People who live and/or work within the metropolitan area? People who work within the city proper? Just people who LIVE within the city proper (if it's that last case, I find the statistics hard to believe).
Also, are those 4-in-10 and 58% figures just among PDA-users? I mean, I understand they're in high proliferation, but I find it hard to believe that MOST people here own Blackberry or Blackberry-like devices, much less check them on the toilet? If it's just PDA-users, the 4-in-10 figure seems a little low to me.
These figures would make an amusing anecdote if they made any sense.
In a related story, DC residents rank last in actually having a life.
Yeah I have accidentally dropped mine on my girlfriend's face once while multitasking: "snuggling" and writing a e-mail for work.
Hey don't get mad at those of us who have them, #1 you are just jealous and #2 you are not important enough. FYI most gov't employees don't have them, unlike those of us on K.
Enough of this, I'm going back to LNS...
"Yeah I have accidentally dropped mine on my girlfriend's face once while multitasking: "snuggling" and writing a e-mail for work."
Who could avoid being jealous of that?
Get over yourself K St. Most definitely put the thing on vibrate when... but then... eeew. You've done that already haven't you?
