Let's Play Find the Free Slurpee

With all the hubbub this past weekend over 07/07/07 – the weddings, worldwide concerts, and the seven new wonders –- it was easy to forget that today is another “lucky” numerical date: 07/11.

While newly wedded couples are off at their honeymoons today, 7-Eleven is celebrating its birthday with free Slurpees. In honor of the chain’s 80th year in business, 7-Eleven will be handing out 7.11 ounce samples of the brain-freeze-producing drink for today only.

Last year's Slurpee giveaway in D.C. was a disappointment, so don't get too excited. A random sampling today of 7-Eleven stores in the D.C. area showed that participation in the giveaway is hit-or-miss. Although one 7-Eleven employee informed us that all stores are supposed to be handing out samples, many other stores within the city seem to be either unaware or refusing to participate, while most of those outside the District that we talked to said that they are. Either way, each store’s giveaway lasts as long as their stock of commemorative cups lasts.

Perhaps store owners are taking the Simpsons Movie promotion a little too seriously –- that Apu could be real hardass over his Squishees sometimes…

Stores can be found… pretty much everywhere, but here’s some help if you’re lost. If you know of a store in the District that's definitely participating, let us know in the comments.
