Lanier Orders 2nd 'All Hands on Deck' Weekend: On the heels of a rash of recent shootings, especially in the Anacostia neighborhood, D.C. Police are launching another "All Hands On Deck" weekend, where every MPD officer is required to work a full shift in a show of force. On the previous weekend, June 8-9, police reported making more than 650 arrests.
Branch Library Construction to Begin Next Summer: City officials announced yesterday that construction on four delayed, long-closed D.C. public libraries, the Anacostia, Benning, Tenley-Friendship and Watha T. Daniel-Shaw neighborhood branches, will break ground next summer. The $37 million project is scheduled to be finished by early 2010. After years of delays, only the Benning branch remains controversial, as a group of residents were granted a temporary injunction to halt demolition of the library. They are arguing whether or not it would be more cost effective to renovate and add an addition to the existing building.
Briefly Noted: Many D.C. Schools have broken air conditioners ... O'Malley, Fenty and Johnson team up to fight gun violence ... Both Gov. Kaine and Gov. O'Malley want federal drought disaster relief for parts of their states suffering from a lack of rainfall ... National Children's Museum moves to Prince George's County.
This Day in DCist: Last year we wondering why Mr. Seymour Butz was getting such a low salary from the D.C. government, and the year before that we gave the men of D.C. a few tips on where to buy not too expensive suits.

I noticed in the article about the children's museum that "The Awakening" sculpture will be moving to this new PG county development as well.
This irks me.
So will the Childrens Museum return all of the DC taxpayers money that they recieveda few years ago?
I certainly think that they should.
I love this photo. Right click... save.
re: the photo - I was wondering if lolsquirrels would take off... this photo is a good one to start with.
If it involves any variation on the "I'm in your xxx doing your xxx" I'll be sick. That macro has been driven into the ground. The meme can be taken in so many new directions but lazy folks keep reaching for the low-hanging fruit.
I'm annoyed by the Children's Museum and Awakening move to National Harbor in PG County also. The new location will be an ugly, inaccessible blot on the landscape, and it's reprehensible that the Children's Museum isn't going to be located near a Metro Station.

NCM must have a fantastic marketing team if they think they are going to lure tourist across the WW Bridge or down 295 to PG County….They better hope the National harbor is booking some child friendly conventions.
speaking of not-too-expensive suits...
someone asked once long ago the following question:
"What about a slim-cut, modern European suit for a shorter, narrow guy? I'm 5'7", soccer build for a 36S in the off-the-rack styles. Most suits are too boxy for me. Any suggestions?"
this is pretty much me, except perhaps i am more 'slim build' than 'soccer build'. unfortunately the best-fitting suits i've found have been at h&m. can anyone provide any good/well-priced suggestions?
btw, i have a suit from brooks brothers and it is wayyy too "boxy" as well. same with a suit from express.
I went to private school and we didn't have any air conditioning for the whole 7 years I was there. I don't see what the big deal is.
Nice to know councilmember Thomas has nothing better to do than propose racial divisions of the DC Council. Must be nice to be able to get elected based solely on daddy's name recognition. Maybe he and former Senator George Allen should talk.
Good riddance to the museum - they were slated to get rid of the only public food court (such as it is) in the L'Enfant Promenade area in order to put the museum down in the basement. While that format has worked for certain of the Smithsonian museums, I don't see a lot of families trekking their kids down to a failed mid-century disaster to wander around underground.
Guest 8 - Cry me a river, try finding a suit or jacket in size 50/52L that doesn't look like a circus tent.
Does the "Anacostia neighborhood" even exist? Seems like it's too big an area to be deemed a neighborhood. Mistakes about east of the river events are far too common when most of us live on "this" side of the river.
May someone with a psych background analyze councilmember's Thomas's divisive proposal? It it pure insecurity? Or is there something more? What a jerk.
What a great photo! I love how the squirrel looks like it's holding a little camera as well. Bravo, erin*carly!
I can’t help but speculate that Councilman Thomas’s proposal my be a reaction Jim Graham and other white members forcing Ward 5 to accept the clubs displaced by the baseball stadium, despite opposition by his black constituents. Didn’t all the white members vote for moving the clubs and 4 black members vote against?
Maybe Marion Barry has passed his torch and deck of race cards to Harry Thomas.
Moose,
The underground Le Fant plaza location would have been totatly razed and redeveloped the area at a cost of $300 million:
"The redeveloped L'Enfant Plaza will include the new 140,000 square foot CapitalChildren's Museum, which will change its name to the National Children's Museum when the new facility opens in 2006. JBG is also planning street level retail shops, offices and housing". The mususem would have stood where the plaza is now.
It is a shame it will not be there, it would have given that area a nice shot in the arm.

Eh, the whole area needs to be redone, starting with the road surface itself. I only hope that if and when the redevelopment of the Waterfront starts and they include the planned pedestrian pathway over Maine Avenue from L'Enfant Promenade that it'll spur another look at the dreadful design that Pei's firm has stuck us with down here.
Thomas's move would be laughable it weren't so sad.
Imagine the hell that would ensue if a Councilmember proposed a White Caucus and said that there were too many blacks in DC.
Caucus's are supposed to be in place to promote the interests of a small, usually fairly powerless minority and to keep those minority's rights from being trampled on. In DC, blacks are in the majority. Just apparently not enough of a majority for Thomas (he's quoted in the article as saying that the reason for the caucus is that there are too many non-blacks moving into DC).
Either we're color-blind or we're not.
Used to be back when we had balls we'd call Thomas's action what it is - racism.
