This Week in Jazz
>> Tonight, Yamomanem brings the funky sounds of New Orleans to the Wonderland Ballroom. The music starts at 9 p.m., no cover.
>> A native of China’s Hunan province, vocalist Coco Zhao discovered jazz at 17 and later studied at The Shanghai Conservatory of Music. He comes to the Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage tonight at 6 p.m. Free.
>> Two guitarists come to town on Thursday. Jazz guitarist Wayne Wilkinson, a former member of the premier Air Force jazz ensemble, The Airmen of Note, comes to the Millennium Stage for a free 6 p.m. show. Later that evening, young up-and-comer Ravi Joseph, currently a student at the University of Miami, comes to Twins Jazz along with local heavyweights James King (bass) and Greg Holloway (drums). >> This Thursday, veteran vocalist/pianist Freddy Cole (pictured), comes to Blues Alley for a four night stand. Sets are at 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. Tickets available online. $25 + $10 food/drink minimum.

>> On Friday, Huancara, a group that combines traditional Andean music with more contemporary influences, visits the Millennium Stage for a free 6 p.m. concert.
>> The baritone saxophone is a relatively rare instrument in small group jazz. Bari player Jason Marshall brings his quintet to Twins Jazz this Friday and Saturday for 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. sets. Tickets are $15 and available here.
>> Argentinian saxophonist Gato Barbieri comes to The Birchmere for a 7:30 p.m. show. $45.
>> See the future of jazz on this Saturday and next Monday. The Philadelphia Jazz Orchestra, a big band comprised of the best high school and college musicians from the greater Philadelphia and New Jersey areas, comes to the Millennium Stage on Saturday for a free 6 p.m. concert. On Monday, The Blues Alley Youth Orchestra comes to the legendary club for 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. sets. Tickets available online. $15 + $10 food/drink minimum.
>> Continuing the unabashed promotion of the Millennium Stage, saxophonist David Bond comes to the Kennedy Center next Monday for a free 6 p.m. show.
>> Next Tuesday, Djabe (pictured) comes to Blues Alley with their fusion of jazz with traditional Eastern European melodies. Sets are at 8 and 10 p.m. Tickets available online. $18+$10 food/drink minimum.
>> Those who need their smooth jazz fix should head down to The Birchmere next Tuesday to see Acoustic Alchemy, the acoustic-guitar-led group is a familiar one on contemporary jazz charts. 7:30 show. $35.
