Photo of the Day: August 6, 2007

sheep at mt. vernon

It looks like someone took a lot of time to set up this scene in miniature, or to hand-draw those little lambs in their own verdant pasture. Not so. This photo comes to us from pamelaviola, and is probably a product of a little tilt-shift or some digital manipulation to make it look that way. At any rate, the color of the grass and selective focus around the lambs lands this photo on the POTD pedestal for today. It wasn't an easy choice, though! You photogs have had a busy weekend. Keep it up!

This definitely has the look of an old Kodachrome shot. I normally grouse a little when a highly manipulated photo lands in POTD (particularly when it's just a bland composition juiced up with insane color saturation), but this is really well done and quite evocative of old postcards.

That's almost certainly taken using a lensbaby.

Finally, somebody on flickr who understands how to use a Lensbaby properly. Next to HDR, it's gotta be the most abused photo gimmick these days.

I love Pamela's work - so original. I'd venture to say that this was NOT taken with a Lensbaby, but modified in post production (easy to do in Photoshop).

Quick caveat: I know next to nothing about photography. That being said, the blur effect doesn't appear to be in any way symmetrical, which makes me think, like guest 4, that it was achieved with Photoshop rather than with a Lensbaby. Whatever she did, it's really cool.

Thank you all! Especially Reid for recognizing the old Kodachrome connection. I love the old Kodachrome colors and I'm always looking for reasons to try and recreate them.

As for Lensbaby -vs- Photoshop, I have to admit I didn't even know what a Lensbaby was until about ten days ago -- I'm not a big gadget person. So for those of you who went with the Photoshop option, you're correct.

Thanks again for taking the time to check out my work. If you're interested you can see more on my blog http://www.pamelaviola.blogspot.com

Of course, they still sell view cameras.

Kodachrome, too, but I think there's only one place left that develops it.
