Out and About: Weekend Picks

governmentissue.jpgFRIDAY:

>> Stop by Velvet Lounge to lend your support to John Stabb, singer of the legendary D.C. hardcore act Government Issue, who's struggling to pay medical bills after being attacked near his home in Burtonsville, Maryland. $8, doors at 9 p.m.

>> The Quarry House in Silver Spring hosts recent Three Stars alums The Hall Monitors along with New York's The Brides. Cover merely advertised as "real cheap," show starts at 9 p.m.

>> You can't go wrong with tonight's lineup at The Rock and Roll Hotel, celebrating the one-year anniversary of the local indie music site, Instrumental Analysis with a set by electronica songstress Jette Kelly, who has shared the stage with bands like The Chemical Brothers and Scissor Sisters. She’ll be joined by Bellman Barker and two former Three Stars Lejeune and Le Loup. 9:30 p.m., FREE before 9 p.m., $10 after.

>> Don't forget to check our guide to the Can a Sista Rock a Mic? Festival for our picks of the best offerings, including D.C.’s Alison Carney and Yahzarah/Purple St. James, Carol Riddick and Sy Smith tonight at Republic Gardens. $15, doors at 7 p.m.

SATURDAY:

>> The U.S. Navy Memorial kicks off its fall film festival, Matinees at the Memorial: The U.S. Navy in Film, with a free screening of Mr. Roberts at 11 a.m. in the Burke Theater, inside the U.S. Naval Heritage Center. Keep an eye on their screening schedule for other Navy-themed offerings through December, including The Hunt for Red October, Top Gun and The Bridge on the River Kwai.

>> The Verizon Center plays host to the The National Museum of the American Indian's National Powwow, which welcomes Native American tribes from all over the country for a weekend of dance and drum competitions as well as a cultural fair. $15.

>> The Library of Congress' Mary Pickford Theater is hosting Home Movie Day this year now that the Warehouse is scaling back, so head on over to check out historic home movies from the Library of Congress collection and screenings of films brought by the public. Free, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

SUNDAY:

>> Look up to the sky this weekend and make a wish. Those falling stars are part of the Perseids meteor shower, which reaches its peak on Sunday night. If you can, drive out past the city lights and bring a blanket, then look northeast to the constellation Perseus (showers are named after the constellation they seem to "fall" from) between 11 p.m. and dawn. We're supposed to get quite a show this year, possibly seeing as many as one per minute. And the best part? It's a new moon this weekend, so maybe even us city folks can get a good view.
