Eye Captain's iconic shot of the giant swing ride at the Montgomery County Agricultural Fair reminds us it's high time to check out some pig races and grab ourselves a deep-fried Oreo and some funnel cake. Who's with us? EXIF.

They bit this off the Under the Table and Dreaming cover. This is not original.

And I'm sure the guy who took the picture for Dave Matthews invented taking pictures of the swings...

Look it up. It's the same angle and lighting and time of day. It's more than just the concept of a photo of a swing.

I can honestly say, I had no idea just how many art critics we had in DC until DCist starting doing POTD.....will we ever have a POTD entry whose first comment isn't some variation of "this sucks"?

And, really, this photo was "bitten" off of a fucking Dave Matthews album cover? You're sure the photog has seen that cover art? Glad we have someone here to keep us straight on what the artist is conveying with his/her work.

I did look it up. The DMB cover pic is taken a bit from a bit farther back and more head on, with the entire ride in view. But yeah, the colors/lighting are about the same.

Saying something sucks and something is curiously reminiscint of a well-known (and extremely widely available) image are totally different. All I can say is look up the cover of the album and you'll see the similarities. That's all I wrote.

Jesus, dude [#1]. Have an aspirin and take a nap. It isn't as though Eye Captain doesn't contribute a ton of original (and excellent) photography to the Flickr/DC universe. Why the hell would he bother to "bite" anything? I'll admit it's a similar shot, but dang. Let that ulcer cool, or it'll never heal.

I am sooooo sick of DC folks driving up into our nice, leafy suburbs and running amuck over our fairgrounds. As soon as you live and work in Montgomery County and pay for our nice roads, then you are allowed to be here! Until then, stick to complaining about Metro funding!

all carnivals at night are going to have similar colors, but i like the fact that we are outing some people who owned a dave matthew album.

funny how its like the same brand and picture on the whirly ride.

if I remember correctly OMD also had an image of a swing ride on one of their singles--I think it was if you leave. So, Dave Matthews was actually copying OMD. I've dated myself now.

Eye Captain here. It's an honor to have a photo as the PotD, and even more so to have it stir up a mini storm of controversy. That's part of the fun of PotD, to see the comments, be it comic, insightful, snarky, or brusque ("it sucks"). Anyways, re the photo, I am only vaguely aware of the Dave Matthews Band's album cover - no doubt I passed a poster of it at some point, but any similarities are coincidental. Not that there's anything wrong with an homage - I love trying to get my own "cliche" shots of DC - the monuments, etc - and my own postcard shots as well as some different perspectives that reflect my own interests and travels. I have long wanted to have my own shot on Flickr of the swings ride - I was definately inspired by other similar images, if not the "Under the Table" cover. (There's even a Flickr group just for shots of this ride.) I love carnival lights and the motion of the riders, even though my point-and-shoot can't quite get the clarity I'd like. It was worth heading out to Montgomery County just to finally be able to try to capture this beautiful ride.

I dig it: the pic resembles a huge electric jellyfish god, throwing its human slaves around before consuming them with tongues of flame...

Who said mescaline and County Fairs don't mix?
