Touch Up D.C. #4

2007_0814_touchupdc%282%29.jpg

Hopefully andertho doesn't mind reader Michael J. West using his recent Photo of the Day as the backdrop for his Touch Up D.C. entry, titled "Star Wars Tunnel.” Stabilize your rear deflectors, watch for enemy fighters and keep those touched up photos coming, either by tagging your Flickr photo with "touchupdc" or emailing them to sommer (at) dcist.com (looks like a lot of you who don't regularly use Flickr are having trouble, so yes, emailing them in is fine).

Oh dear god, the shit-poor aliasing, the non-coherent lighting... make it stop, please lord jesus h. buddha, make it stop.

Actually, the special effects in the original Star Wars movie looked about as good as this.

guest[1], you are officially No Fun. It's a goof! Crikey.

This is hilarious. (And it would make a good movie.)

Brilliant.

All time great.

Just to be a bit defensive, the problem with flickr is not about being a new user. It seems that they are quoting something in their FAQ about "If the images you upload aren't photos, or they are images you 'borrowed,' stock photos, celebrity photos, stuff that appears to be copyrighted by someone else, screenshots, nudity, or partial nudity, it's safe to assume that we have marked you as NIPSA (Not in Public Site Areas)." (http://www.flickr.com/help/tags/#60)

The concept of Touch Up DC pretty much requires that you violate this rule. Frankly I'm not sure how they have listed most of the ones that have been shown.

Huh, OK thanks for clarifying that, doug. Makes sense. People should send their entries directly to me! So it shall be written, so it shall be done.

Good concept though! I improved on it a little bit...

It doesn't really matter if it bothers andertho (the original photographer of the tunnel shot) or not. When you post on flickr you give up a lot of your rights as the creator of whatever images you post. (creative commons?) If you opt to mark images as copyright protected then they couldn't be used on the dcist (or any other) site. I wish we could protect the rights of professional photographers and artists and still have a visually dynamic and exciting blog. Now we're relying on unpaid amateurs (no offense) who should be compensated for the use of their images. Just something to think about.

That is an incorrect view of copyright on Flickr. I can keep all my photos set at All Rights Reserved and not use the Creative Commons license and still allow dcist to use them. By placing them in the dcist group or tagging the photo with dcist I am stipulating a photo may be used on this site while I still retain rights.

Andertho does the exact same thing. This does mean that the person that used his photo for the Touch Up entry did violate copyright. To allow remixing it would need to be set at Creative Commons. I have no idea if this bother Andertho or not.

Damn, Guest[8], you DID improve on it! Color this rip-off auteur/Photoshop novice impressed.

And apologies to Andertho. Although I take it from comment [5] that you're not too upset...

The shadow and of course the "cleaner" edges make all the difference. :)

I am upset at all, although I agree with the copyright stuff above.

If you had taken this and made a bunch of cash off it, I might care.

As it is, it's just fun.

That's cool.

Oops. Meant to say "not upset at all".

awesome

I think it would be better for DCist to rely on the DCist Flickr group as an indication of permission rather than the DCist tag. After all, other people (friends, members of groups the photos are in) can add tags to your photos. To add a photo to a group requires action by the photo owner.

But maybe they already do this and I've missed the explanation.

Also, using the group rather than the tag means that newly added photos show up even if they were originally uploaded some time ago, rather than being lost in the old tagged photos.

I don't believe someone else can add your photo to a pool? DCist uses a pool, not a tag.

According to this, they use a tag. According to this (still linked from the sidebar), they still haven't figured out how to handle photos.

There is pool/group, and I agree (as I said above) that they should be using it. It's just not clear that they are.

KCinDC: I don't know, then. :) Sommer will have to clarify.

We use both the photo pool and the tag.
