Morning Roundup: Hurry Up and Wait Edition

2007_0821_MR%282%29.jpg

Good morning, D.C. If you live in Wards 1 or 2, don't forget to turn out to vote today in the special election for District I member of the State Board of Education. There's only one name on the ballot, that of veteran education reporter Mary Lord, but as we mentioned before, there's also a write-in candidate, first-year teacher in DCPS Jason Crawford. Check out each candidate's web site and decide for yourself. If you're registered to vote in Wards 1 or 2 but are unsure of your polling place, go here.

Drunk Driving Deaths Way Down in D.C.: The Examiner brings the good news that the number of drunk driving related fatalities in D.C. dropped 37 percent between 2005 and 2006, the biggest percentage decrease in the country, according to statistics released Monday by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The MPD is crediting their public outreach efforts for the drop, but considering neighboring Prince William and Montgomery counties both saw increases, we would have to argue once again that it has more to do with the availability of reliable public transportation late at night in D.C. -- Metro service until 3 a.m. only began a couple years before this sample.

Rhee Rushes to Get Books in Place: D.C. Schools start Monday, but the Post reports that while Schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee said yesterday that her goal is to have 95 percent of the school system's textbooks in the schools by opening day, almost 40 percent of those books were not in place as of yesterday. As Rhee and her staff hustle to get all those books in place this week, she also announced that all 20 principal vacancies have now been filled.

Briefly Noted: Union criticizes firings of guards from D.C. Jail involved in gender mix-up ... University of Maryland ranks 14th "party school" in nation ... Va. Gov. Kaine orders spending cuts in face of budget shortfall.

How late are the polls going to be open today?

The MPD is crediting their public outreach efforts for the drop, but considering neighboring Prince William and Montgomery counties both saw increases, we would have to argue once again that it has more to do with the availability of reliable public transportation late at night in D.C. -- Metro service until 3 a.m. only began a couple years before this sample.

Um, deaths dropped from 19 in 2005 to 12 in 2006. Kinda small sample from which to draw such HUGE conclusions. Why aren't you crediting the smoking ban? Or sun spots?

I'm getting "Correlation does not equal causation" tattooed on my forehead. I got a sweet 2-4-1 tattoo deal for the H.R. Puffinstuff that's going to go on my ass.

Polls are open until 8 p.m. today.

I'll believe that Rhee is rushing to get the books to the right place when I see her out there hauling them into and out of the back of a delivery truck herself.

Sun spots causing a decrease in drunk driving fatalities? Don't be ridiculous.

Everyone knows sun spots only cause restless leg syndrome.

Why would a schools chancellor have to do the physical work herself? She is a manager of workers. And, she has only been at the job barely 2 months now.

Monkeyerotica, excellent points.

In addition to monkeyrotica's point, the MPD's outreach program (whatever it entails) doesn't directly apply to people in Montgomery or Prince William counties. So the argument also sorta reads like this:

They say DC-proper-related factor A is the cause, but since several counties outside of DC proper weren't effected, clearly DC-proper-related factor B is the cause.

Wow, DCist. You missed the boat AGAIN! Re: the Gender "Mix-up" by the US Marshall and DC Police. Much bigger story that is downgraded by your placement under "Briefly Noted".

The fact that the prisoner was a woman, classified as a man after a strip search and shower, and called "Thing" by the US Marshal, drug charges aside, represents a human rights violation.

#6 - Because good managers sometimes have to lead by example, or actually step in and do the job when their subordinates aren't capable of getting the job done. And, cynically, because it would make a good photo op to show she's serious about actually doing something more than fretting from the sidelines.
