About Tonight

>> The Velvet Lounge hosts Three Stars alums and excellent understated rockers New Rock Church of Fire, with Mas y Mas and The Domesticated. 9 p.m.
>> Home of those brilliant Saturday afternoon cheapo Miller High Life countdown specials, epic Jell-O wrestling contests and the surprising winner of any Best Vegan Brunch contest in the city, everyone probably has a different reason for their soft spot for Asylum. Whatever yours is, stop by tonight to wish the crew of the Adams Morgan bar a happy Sweet 16th birthday. Will there be beer specials? We can only assume so.
>> Looking for a good charity happy hour? Try Local 16 tonight from 6 to 9 p.m., when 25% of all profits will go toward the Slog for Sudan effort, an extreme plan by eight hikers to walk 200 miles down the C&O canal with no backpacks, no tents, no sleeping bags and absolutely no food. They set off on Sept. 1, so they'll need some stiff drinks and your support tonight.
>> If childhood memory serves, Big Trouble in Little China is the weirdest, most nonsensical film ever created. A trucker gets dragged into a centuries-old mystical battle in Chinatown? What? And yep, it's playing tonight at the AFI Silver Theater at 9:30 p.m.

big trouble in little china is brilliant!
Not only that, but the AFI has been showing it in the main theater on their biggest screen. I went on Saturday night and it was awesome ... great quality print, and a much better movie than I remembered, even despite the deliberately hammy acting. Highly recommended.
Wait a minute...it's the Miller High Life countdown now? I haven't been to Asylum since they expanded into the Pizza Movers' space above, but when did they go away from the Shiner Bock countdown? That stinks.
