Butterstick's New Nemesis -- Snickers
When the District's resident panda cub was born two years ago, zoo officials inadvertently compared the tiny, hairless creature to a stick of butter. Since then, Tai Shan has always been Butterstick to those who love him the most.
But Butterstick -- who is no longer that small, that cute or worth that much news coverage -- may soon be forgotten. The Kids section of the Post (Yeah, we read it. Wanna fight?) is reporting today that a panda cub born in Vienna, Austria has been compared to a king-size Snickers bar. And though it'll surely be given a more proper name in due time, it'll always just be Snickers the Panda to the Austrian people.
We just can't compete. Until our own Mei Xiang up and decides it's time to be pregnant again, we're going to be stuck playing second fiddle to Vienna and San Diego, home to the country's most prolific mating pandas. Until then, we'd like to salute Snickers and wish him the best.

1. Butterstick is ALWAYS cute.
2. Butterstick is ALWAYS worthy of news coverage.
3. Butterstick's name is not an object of crass corporate marketing.

Let me get this straight. The Austrians with all their "fine" chocolates have a close knowledge of snickers? We have surplanted their chocolate with ours? U S A! U S A!
And King-Sized-Snickers-Bar does not roll off the tongue like Butterstick.
I be to differ on the statement that Butterstick is no longer "that cute." He's still the cutest little giant panda ever!!
I love that there are so many people who come to visit who still haven't seen Butterstick because that gives me an excuse to get to the Zoo (and, more specifically, the panda habitat) on a regular basis. A coworker and I got there early for Brew at the Zoo last night and she was a bit bummed that none of the pandas were out roaming around.

The word "Snickers" must sound sound absolutely elegant to Viennese.
They discovered the Austrian panda was actually a twin, unfortunately it's sibling died. :(
