Morning Roundup: Eastern Market Lives Edition
Months after a fire gutted the interior of Eastern Market's South Hall and almost destroyed the District landmark, vendors will be back in business tomorrow in a temporary structure built across the street. The structure, which looks like a big white tent, cost $1.5 million and will be used while $25 million in repairs are completed on the South Hall, a process that could take up to two years. We're happy to see things slowly coming back to normal, and we encourage everyone to head on down this weekend to check things out.
Warner Calls for Troop Withdrawal: Senator John Warner (R-Va.) called on President Bush to withdraw troops from Iraq in time for Christmas, citing a recent intelligence report that expressed pessimism over political reconciliation in the Middle Eastern country. Warner's call, coming from a respected voice on military affairs, further troubles Bush's attempt to keep Republicans united over the war.
Deadly Week for District: It hasn't been a good one for D.C. Police are investigating a rash of incidents this week in which seven people were killed, six by gunfire and one by stabbing. As of yesterday, the District has recorded 115 homicides this year, two more than the same time last year.
It's Official -- Everyone Hates Virginia's New Fines: Adding their voice to the thousands that hate Virginia's new abusive driver fines, motorist advocacy group AAA asked that Virginia state legislators quickly act to change the law. Already sensing the pressure, legislators are set to consider a package of reforms that would limit the offenses that would trigger the fines -- which range from $750 to $3,000 -- and apply them to out-of-state drivers.
Briefly Noted: D.C. madam wants new lawyer ... School security guard stabbed 16 times ... Watergate closes for 18-month renovation ... MoCo hopes residents will turn each other in.
This Day in DCist: On this day last year, we talked about D.C. bridges falling apart, and just like this Wednesday, we told the NY Red Bulls where to stick it. Two years ago, we tried to get the National Zoo to really call him Butterstick, we saw Capitol Lounge burn and found a budding real estate entrepreneur trying to sell the White House on ebay.

....everyone hates Virginia.
Hopefully Canales Meats will have a good stock of Manger's halfsmokes. Supplies have dried up everywhere else.
And they're not "fines" they're "fees." It's a little legal semantic thing, since only the State can levy fines, but any jurisdiction can charge a fee.
The only person who didn't hate them was the ass legislator whose law firm stood to make a ton of cash off of defending people in court from it.
adubyailkinson,
What’s up with your unyielding hate for Virginia, Checking out your profile, it seems to preoccupy you.
Virgina stood him up for the prom 40 years ago and he's never been the same.
Hates Virginia, yet was probably born in Ohio.
Wait, wait, WAIT a minute! Forget Virginia! Why all the hate for Ohio? Why is it, of all places, the stock state of origin for those "pesky non-natives"? And besides, truth be told, I have met very few "native" DC residents here. This is the center of transplant America. Hell, the local economy is based on an industry (government) that is almost completely comprised of out-of-staters.
Hopefully Canales Meats will have a good stock of Manger's halfsmokes. Supplies have dried up everywhere else.
I'm looking forward to going to the Union Meat Co. for some bacon! I've basically stopped eating bacon since the fire because that's only place I ever buy it.
...go back to Ohio!
Ohio? Apparently some of you don't know Wisconsin!
i've been lost for the past few months without the eastern market meat vendors. A few more weeks and I was likely to go vegan! But now that they're back, animals beware. ill be there bright and early on Saturday with a fistful of cash and an appetite.
We'll return to Ohio when you return to North Dakota, mate.
I'll be there, too, though all summer I've been buying the Canales meats just a few doors down at Tortilla Cafe. And the H Street market's got some damn good bacon, HR. But I understand the loyalty to EM.
The most frustrating part of the past couple months has been going into butcher shops and deli counters all over town and seeing row after row of foofoo, chichi "artisinal" sausages (cranberry turkey sausage? blueberry chicken sausage?), and yet NO HALFSMOKES. We're in ground zero for halfsmokes and nobody's selling them over the counter. Fifty-six varieties of dirty-water skinless hotdogs (chicken dogs, turkey dogs, jumbo all-beef dogs, cheese dogs, prepackaged-with-a-bun dogs, tartar-control dogs), and they all taste like boiled bologna. Well, I've had enough. I'm buying 10-lbs each of the mild and spicy halfsmokes, hiring a lawyer, and then I'm eating them all in one sitting until I go blind. And then I'm going to sue the District for not stopping me.
I hope you have tried the food at the Tortilla Cafe, across 7th St. from the old Eastern Market -- the Canales family runs that, too.
And it looks like Market Lunch will be back tomorrow at the new place.
The diet is off.
Just got back from lunch at Tortilla Cafe. Good cheap breakfast items, nice meaty burritos, but the pupusas go through me like a Ferrari. It gets three-shrieks on the monkeyrotica rating scale.
ME - now that's what I call a restaurant review!
It's a shame dcist won't let me upload a poorly-lit digital photo of my poopooed pupusa bobbing around the bowl. Until then, I guess you can look at this and use your imagination. Minus the tentacles, it's a surprisingly close approximation.
BTW, this should have been POTD. Cat's cute though.
