Go Home Already: Thanks, You Too

>> Fat bastards. No, seriously. We're apparently a bunch of fat bastards. According to a report published by the Trust for America's Health, 22.8 percent of the District's children aged 10-17 are overweight, putting us first in the nation. Strangely enough, our rate of obesity among those older than 17 isn't in the top five (Mississippi tops that category), making us wonder whether the District's kids all lose weight at 18 or move to another state. [NBC 4]

>> At the end of Michelle Rhee's first real day on the job, there are reports that math and reading tests have improved ten-fold, school facilities have been fixed and renovated, and central office bureaucrats and union representatives have finally admitted their role in making the city's schools so bad. Just kidding. But residents have identified the key challenges for Rhee over the next year and beyond. [Post]

The District's kids are shot in a drive by outside of 5 on the eve of their 18th bday. A few a sacrificed to random dc metro fires.

Ignorance must be a "cultural" thing as well.

Is the proposed DC Congestion tax limited to certain parts of DC or the whole shebang? Is driving from MD into Friendship Heights considered the same thing as driving from VA into DC via the 14th Street/Key/Teddy Roos/Memorial bridges?

I hope Jamie Foxx also rots in that special place in Hell reserved for jackasses like him and Vick.

Seems like DC's lil urchins are trying to live up to the Geto Boys mantra "Real gangsta-ass n****s dont run for shit/Cause real gangsta-ass n****s don't run fast." And it certainly isnt because of the quality of their shoes.

Uh, or the fatness of DC's kids could be a new phenomenon and they've haven't aged into the 17+ age bracket yet.

or, the percentage of the population under 18 that lives in poverty is higher than the percentage of the of over 18 year olds that lives in poverty. Lots of association between poverty and obesity, particularly in DC as a result of poor food choices/supermarkets with fresh produce and food east of the gentrification line.

should say lack of supermarkets with fresh produce and food. Mac and cheese from the corner store doesn't count. The lack of access for much of the city to any supermarket at all is a travesty. For the rest of us, there's the Soviet and Secret Safeway

What #8 said - poverty plays a big role in obesity. Mississippi has the highest adult obesity rate, DC has the highest childhood obesity rate ... and guess who has the highest poverty rate? DC and Mississippi tied for first, with 18.3%.

I would guess that a large percentage of DC's adult population has moved here within the past 10 years or so, and that might account for some of the difference between our #1 child obesity rate and our #40 adult obesity rate.

Is the author suggesting that DC kids are not only overweight, but also of illegitimate birth?

Poor people are often forced to buy things to eat that are riddled with fat sort to say.

Guest 10: I assume the 'fat bastard' reference is to the Austin Powers movie character Fat Bastard.

I also would imagine the statistics would skew at the over 17 category, because you have a huge influx of college kids coming in who came from higher socioeconomic status and now throw the native dc stats off. But, seriously, I do see fat kids in my 'hood...but not enough to be worse than Indiana. Indiana is gross.

Anytime you're comparing DC to states you're going to get some out of whack results; DC should be being compared statistically to other cities of similar size, not the state of Montana.

You can have all the fresh fruits and vegetables you want, you can't make people buy them. Every neighborhood I've lived in downtown has had corner stores that carried vegetables and fruits, and for the most part they go to waste and the stores stop carrying them because they can't sell them.

Give kids a choice between a bag of Rap Snacks and some broccoli, which line do you think they'll get in? I know which line I'm gonna be in. It's gonna be that long-ass line. Because nothing goes better with a banana flavored blunt and Remy Martin than a big bag of Mac10 Red Hot Cheddar Cheese Rap Snacks.

No fair Monkey! I can only get Lil'Romeo Honey Snacks at my corner bodega. Show off.
