Photo of the Day: August 27, 2007

storm at mason neck

The weather was pretty intense this weekend, wasn't it, Washington? With heat indices reaching to a hotter-than-a-crotch 105ยบ right before Saturday's intense thunderstorms, and then a cooler Sunday with some good heat lightning (from the Hill, anyway) and crazy cloud formation right before sunset, we were treated to quite a show. A great pre-storm photo catches the intensity of our weather (and some of the great colors that go along with it). Andertho spiced up this scene from Mason Neck with a little HDR action and well-executed composition.

Take a gander at our photo pool for some other great weather photos taken this weekend.

is this really near DC? it looks like the midwest....

There's no such thing as heat lightning. It's just lightning that's so far away that you can't hear the thunder. Sometimes the refraction occurs between the lightning and observer which can give it an eerie glow, but it's absolutely no different than any other lightning.

You said there's no such thing as heat lightning, but then you went ahead and defined it. Nice work!

HDR burns my retinas.

Well, I think #2's point is that all lightening is "heat lightening," just like all politicians are "pontificating bastards." Yes?

I'm still waiting for Adam to define "head indices" (nice quick fix by the way!)

Agree w/commenter 4. HDR makes everything look like a Thomas Kinkade painting.

0% lately, guest 6.

Now that's well-executed HDR. Not everyone will like it, but done correctly it looks like highly-saturated film (a la Velvia) -- just with more dynamic range.

I love thunderstorms. It's like electro-shock therapy for the soul.

Cool pic! Hey- what's HDR?

Generally I agree with #4 that HDR usually looks cartoonish and gimmicky and makes me want to poke my eyes with a sharp stick, but this actually uses it to nice effect. For once, an HDR photo that doesn't scream out "Look at me! I'm HDR! I'm vivid! I'm different!"

Very nice work, Andertho.
