Please Lord Let Tom Davis Run for Senate

tom_davis.jpgSen. John Warner (R-Va.) made national news last week when he asked President Bush to start bringing the troops home in time for Christmas. But of more importance locally has been the continued speculation as to whether Warner would run for another term in 2008, and if not, who would replace him.

By way of FreeRide, we find out today that yesterday the Post's Sunday Fix briefly noted that Rep. Tom Davis (R-Va.) has been making more and more moves towards announcing a run for Warner's seat, should the senior senator choose to resign. Apparently Davis has been putting together a stealth campaign team, re-connecting with old political hands in preparation for a September announcement from Warner.

And we couldn't be happier. Party politics and baggage aside, Davis has long been a sound and consistent voice for two issues of vital importance to the District -- voting rights and Metro. Along with D.C. Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, Davis has championed District voting rights like few others. In fact, the current legislation that was passed by the House in April and is currently awaiting a Senate vote was his idea, and it has gotten us further than we've been in years. (Warner, on the other hand, voted against the measure in committee.) As for Metro, it was Davis who introduced legislation that would give Metro $1.5 billion in federal funds over 10 years for much-needed capital improvements. In many ways, Davis reflects the changes occuring in Northern Virginia -- though he remains a Republican, he's more likely to work towards regional compromises on key challenges than simply toe the party line.

Obviously, we're jumping ahead of ourselves here. Davis surely has his pitfalls, and it's not even set that Warner will retire and that Davis will get to run. But based on a narrow set of issues of importance to the District, he'd be a good candidate to replace Warner.

I'm a Democrat, and I don't live in his district, but I like Tom Davis. On the other hand, my congressman, Jim Moran (D) is a douche.

I wouldn't be shocked if Davis gets knocked out in the primary for not "being Republican enough." Besides, whomever the GOP puts up there in '08 will get smacked around by Mark Warner.

Maybe if he wore a diaper and whored around more often. Is that too much to ask?

Rumor has it that Warner's staff members are leaving (or already have left).

Politico thinks a Hillary Clinton for the Democrats will win it for the Republicans and hurt it for liberals and moderates running for Congress.

2 good points #2.

How about we recruit Mark Warner to run instead of talking up that gasbag Tom Davis? Just a thought.

It's been a long time since I lived in Virginia, but I still have to say:
You're getting excited about Tom Davis? Really?

Oh, man. Gotta love issues voting - I'm 100% for someone supporting Metro and further pushing voting rights in the Senate - but to the exclusion of all else?! Plus, with the GOP Senate leaders blocking the bill on DC voting I think maybe (just maybe) a few more Dem senators would be more beneficial to us, no?

George Allen is apparently attempting to rehabilitate his career to the point that he can run for Governor, but there's also a thought he could run for Warner's senate seat.

Davis actually gets how computers and the internet can impact how government does its job, and also understands how information sharing and availability is a good thing that can help us all do our jobs better rather than a political talking point. Love the man.

Davis? Nah. Here's another vote for Mark Warner.

You are right, Davis is good on voting rights and the metro. 2 issues that effect his district. He is a good congressman. But a senator? I think not.

Any man who has no more sense than to marry Jeannemarie Devolites, one of the most outspoken bigots in Virginia, doesn't deserve any rational citizen's vote. She's a witch. And he's a fool for marrying her.

And his half baked plan to appease the democrats by giving them less than equal representation in Congress should be reviled, not praised. The day DC settles for anything less than full representation is the day that the DC Vote Campaign will fail completely. Anyone who thinks having half the representation in Congress any other American does is a step in the right direction should go look and see how well compromise legislation like Don't Ask Don't Tell is to move away from!

Mark Warner in '08. He'd be a fool not to jump on the chance to give Virginia ANOTHER blue seat in Congress.

Tom Davis can keep rallying for the district as a Rep. If I still lived in VA, I would be rooting for Mark Warner--I also wanted him to run for president, though...
