About Tonight

2007_08_28_taps.jpg

>> The Jets are gonna have their day tonight at Wolf Trap with the first night of a one week stand of the Leonard Bernstein/Steven Sondheim classic West Side Story. The production celebrates the 50th anniversary of the musical. 8 p.m., $18-$55.

>> It's a great evening for movies. If the Jim Jarmusch classic we recommended last week isn't quite what you're looking for, then there's also a FREE screening of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid at the Smithsonian American Art Museum at 5 p.m. Which means skipping out of work early, but we talked to your boss and she totally approves. Or, for $6 (4 for students) at 6:30, the Goethe Institute is showing a newly restored print of Sergei Eisenstein's massively influential silent film Battleship Potemkin with a discussion led by GWU's Peter Rollberg after the film.

>> With reviewers drawing comparisons between them and acts like the Detroit Cobras and Le Tigre, and Bust Magazine dubbing them "soul-shaking dance-punk queens," it sounds like Von Iva's show at DC9 tonight is where the party's at tonight. Bring your dancing shoes, and show up early to catch Trouble Everyday. $8

>>Local indie folk rockers Whiz Bang Three take the stage at the Red & the Black. But don't be fooled. There are actually five of them. The Champions and Adrian open. 9:30 p.m., $8.
