Karl Rove Wants American Ass
This one has been covered already by a few of our fellow bloggers, but it's almost too good to pass up.
Yesterday Wonkette reported that departing White House Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove was looking to get even with some students at American University who had the tenacity to show him their asses. See, back in April Rove gave a speech before the university's College Republicans, meeting with some feisty protestors as he made his way out. Those arrested were forced into 40 hours of community service, and that was that. But now arrest warrants have been issued by the Secret Service for the mooners. From the Culture Warrior:
On Friday, Gardner and the rest of the group were notified by AU’s Dean of Students that the Secret Service has issued warrants for their arrest. Details are scarce because nobody seems to know what the fuck is going on and we couldn’t get the Dean on the phone on a Sunday, but Gardner and presumably all the others are being charged with crossing a police line and disorderly conduct.I'm no lawyer, but isn't there a statute of limitations on this type of stuff? And does Rove really need the Secret Service to issue the arrest warrants? Aren't there more pressing threats to the president, his staff, his family and the country to attend to?

Limit for something like a disorderly is usually a year, IIRC.. though I would be interested in the jurisdictional issues surrounding the Secret Service making such minor charges. Wouldn't they normally work through the local PD?
The Post article (4/4/07) on the protests says no arrests were made.
maybe the students just had a wide stance and were reaching for some paper.
Aren't pranks like this what college students are supposed to do??
Not really familiar with the initial story, but if the students were sentenced to 40 hours community service, that would imply that they've been convicted of an offense already, which raises the question of what new charge the SS has found.
Or did Gonzales revoke double jeopardy on his way out too...
@4: The writeup isn't clear. The outside group of students was supposedly sentenced to 40 hours service. Now the group of mooners (who were inside) is now supposedly being charged.
Talk about abuse of power.
Didn't those AU students realize it W who enjoyed crack? not Rover!
Rove's just pissed because they were, cumulatively, a bigger ass than he was. At that moment, at least.
He probably saw something he liked and didn't want to risk cruising airport restrooms
..only one student mooned karl rove. over twenty laid down in front of his car. a portion of those students received punishment from the university in the form of community service. that same group recently received warrants. no arrests were made back in april at the protest.
I am pretty sure that Secret Service Uniformed Division Officers can make arrests for DC violations. I know they can pull you over for traffic offenses and they were the ones that busted Barry recently.
AU Campus Police have limited "Special Police" powers and given the Secret Service and campus police presence at that event, there may not have been that many MPD officers on the scene, thus, the investigation falls to the Secret Service.
As for the double jeopardy, I was under the impression from other reports that AU, through its internal judicial system (which is really more of an administrative system), gave them the community service, so there is no double jeopardy if another layer of the justice system goeas after them.
My real question is about these phantom warrants. Usually, if the police get a warrant for your arrest they do 1 of 2 things. They either notify you and ask that you surrender yourself, or they arrest you themselves. Why would they notify a third party like AU and not the students themselves? That really makes no sense. If I were one of the students involved, I would have my attorney call the US Attorney's office and the DC AG and ask point blank "is there an outstanding warrant for my client's arrest, and if so, when and where can I turn him in." That would end this speculation right there.
Arresting students for "mooning" is an odd way of trying to defend what little integrity the Administration retains. Could Karl possibly come off as any more petty or ridiculous?
Political mooning has ancient antecedents, and was mentioned by Josephus in the First Century. Of course, when a Roman Soldier mooned at the crowd from the steps of the temple in Jerusalem, a riot ensued. Touchy, those Hebrews.
Karl Rove is a bit in arrears in getting to the bottom of this.
That's my favorite political commentary:
"Oh yeah? Here's my ass!"
...your rebuttal?
Arresting students for "mooning" is an odd way of trying to defend what little integrity the Administration retains. Could Karl possibly come off as any more petty or ridiculous?
In a word: yes,"the day ain't over yet". BTW, there is no integrity left to defend. The real question is, will the media ever acknowledge his pettiness and vindictiveness? In a word: no.
Well, at least the students know they really got to him.
See, the real problem is that Karl knows his face could easily be mistaken for an ass, confusing secret service agents about what, exactly, they are supposed to be protecting.
What if this had been a plot to get Karl by distracting agents with asses all over the place, leaving the biggest ass of all without the protection that keeps him from wetting himself in terror everytime he goes in public?
Remember, for all the death and destruction they have caused, Rove, like Bush, Cheney and the rest of them, are draft dodging cowards, always afraid someone is going to get them.
And why does Karl have secret service protection anyway?
Martin,
Just like you were arrested at Penn state for showing your ass, these kids need to be taught a good lesson too.
Ramon R. José Rivera
How about a warrant from the people for Rove showing his ass all these years? Oh wait, maybe he's standing on his head and needs a mint!
"maybe the students just had a wide stance and were reaching for some paper."
Greatest DCist comment ever.
Why shouldn't the Secret Service go after these awful, unpatriotic little traitors? After all, it should be clear to everyone that these "buttcheeks of ass destruction" posed an imminent threat to Mr. Rove.
They were already arrested back when it happened.
Isn't there some law about not being permitted to charge someone twice for the same incident in which they have already repaid their debt to society (community service)?
please scratch that comment I submitted since I just saw in the thread a comment about double jepardy and how it doesn't apply here.
egg on face, please excuse me. too busy to read all the comments and I really was quite taken aback at the audacity of rove. turdblossom my ass, he's just a turd.
Rove is a Secret Service protectee. He's also a vindictive jerk. Add those two things together and you get a court case.
Too much bad news this morning, I had to have a little fun with this one, hope it doesn't offend too many of you, just sent this to my friends:
Aahhhh, I've got it, Karl meets the arrestees in a private cell, his thigh-high, black, patent leather, stiletto boots squeaking and squishing, suggestively, topped by a dog-collar codpiece, attached with a silver chain to his rhinestone nipple-clips, black mask and........whips in hand.
This is why Karl's cranky.
Ahhhhh, only in Amaraka.
Thanks, Everett (#8)...it was obvious, yet I couldn't come up with it myself....LMAO
I am nearly positive that there was only one mooner. The rest were protestors who remained fully clothed.
yeah im friends with the guy - im pretty sure he was the only one. also, he moons everyone. rove shouldn't really be all that offended...
Karl has no intention of pressing charges. He just wants the SS to take pics of their asses, get a copy of the reports which will give him names and addresses so he can pick out which tush's he likes best and pay it a personal visit.
As the Mooner's Mom - (Really!) I would have to echo that the mooner really does moon everyone, at least his friends - so Karl should consider this a high compliment. So imagine my shock that there is a warrant for his arrest - as I am sure mostly college students read this blog - you all should be appalled at this! What a waste of tax payor money. That this would merit an arrest shows how little the secret service and attorney general's office have to do -
Mooning Karl Rove: Wouldn't this make a terrific test case of American citizens' constitutional right to protest: Your Supreme Court Honor, the right to MOON our Government's Leaders, is Protected "Free Speech"!
As "Evidence", several College Students could MOON the Supremes. THAT I would pay a million bucks to see!
I think you meant to write "audacity" and not "tenacity"....
Surely, mooning is covered by the first amendment?
Actually, I believe the word that you were looking for was "temerity" (not "tenacity").
On the subject of Rove; his hamhanded use of the Secret Service is typical of the bullying behavior of this administration.

These Italian students mooned the Italian government, no warrants issued. We are nothing but a big Myanmar.
No,No,No! Rove isn't an ass. He is more like a "dinkleberry" on Georgies' ass. A hot shower maybe?
