Are D.C. Firefighters Running a Prostitution Ring?

firehose%282%29.jpgThe Washington Times brings us the most, ahem, alarming piece of news we've seen this morning: that D.C. fire officials are investigating whether some firefighters have been running a prostitution ring out of several of the city's firehouses. Around a dozen employees from at least four firehouses are being investigated for involvement in the prostitution ring, which fire officials first learned of after a criminal investigation last month into claims that a sergeant exposed himself to a female EMT at Engine 8 in the 1500 block of C Street SE -- though the investigation is actually focused on another firehouse, Engine 27, at 4201 Minnesota Ave. NE.

Certainly, these are disturbing allegations. But if you're not sitting there at your computer reading this and wondering about the best possible deployment of the word "firehose" in response to this story, then we just don't know each other at all, DCist readers. With that, please enjoy these responses that popped up this morning on the DCist staff email list, and add your own in the comments.

>> D.C.F.D.: They can put out any fire, but can't figure out how to stop that burning sensation.

>> When you install a steel pole it's inevitably going to attract a certain class of people...

>> Most prostitution services advertise with red lights. Only one can run them.

>> Officials wondered why the fire department had ads in the "Wild Side" section of the City Paper classifieds.

>> Anybody need a fire put out?

Maybe the female EMT's were just doing as they were trained and checking their coworkers for priapisms.

DC Firefighters: They'll get you wet.

Over the line?

Heading to the Engine 27 web site gives this motto:

DCFD's Busiest Single House

and this advertisement:

Perform. Like No Other.

The possibilities are endless...

Sommer: I believe it's spelled 'firehoes'

Severely offended advocate for exploited sex workers in 3, 2, 1...

That poor, flaccid hose. I guess it is from another firehouse in the city?

Maybe this operation is a way to give back to those citizens who have non-functioning fire hydrants.

Not the only pole in the firehouse.

We have slippery poles.

Do you know where that pole has been?

where's monkeyrotica when you need him?

Dear Sirs:

As an severely offended advocate for exploited sex workers, I must protest in the strongest possible terms to the suggestion that the DC Fire Department is a haven for prostitution. It is well known that we now have the problem relatively under control, and that it is the DC Police Department who now suffer the largest "casualties" in this area. And what do you think the Argylls screwed in Aden? Arabs?

Yours etc. Captain B.J. Smethwick in a white wine sauce with shallots, mushrooms and garlic.

A true Red Light district?

Reported in the Washington Times, was it? I can't WAIT to see the Tom Knott column that comes out of this one.

What the hell else are they supposed to do when nothing is on fire? You should be GRATEFUL, that tax-paying, hard-working civil servants are looking after the community's needs, rather than chlamydia-ridden street-walkers!

Guest #11: Not just community needs for hot fireperson action are being met here, but the firefighters should be commended for finding additional revenue, um, streams. Raises and promotions all around!
