Keep Eating for (Kinda) Cheap

Written by DCist contributor Claire Compton

Like the classic summer fling, Restaurant Week has officially left us, leaving us with a bittersweet mix of emotions. The lucky ones are gushing about that new restaurant they discovered and how they were wooed with an impossibly fantastic meal that didn't drain their wallet.

Others weren't so lucky. They began the week with a wide-eyed idealism, believing this meal was going to be the one, only to be left jaded and sometimes still-hungry after dining at restaurants that just didn't feel the same way about Restaurant Week.

For those of you who believe in second chances, or want to relive the magic of last week, an impressive number of restaurants (DCFoodies has the count at 21) are keeping the menu on from anywhere to one week to an entire month. DCFoodies' Jason Storch has put a great deal of legwork into compiling a list of who's offering an extended Restaurant Week menu as well as restaurants' limitations contained in their RW deals. Rather than steal his thunder and reprint the whole thing here, allow us to point you in his direction.

The Restaurant Week gold star may just have to go to Oya, where the prix-fixe menu jumped the gun and was available beginning August 1 and will run until September 9.
Coming in second place for RW enthusiasm are, Ceviche, Dino, Petits Plats and Pinzimini, where the menu is available for the month of August. Non-RW deals include Georgetown staple 1789's summer special whereby you can snag three courses for $36 (with a $10 surcharge on the lamb and beef) until September 11, Posh's summer "Early Bird" special, and the best deal in D.C.: Cityzen's three-course tasting menu, only available at the bar for just $45 (but hurry, they close on August 19 until September 7).

Eleven restaurants are extending the menu for one more week (including Mie N Yu, Grillfish, and Indebleu) and four have the menu an extra two weeks. The special advantage to these extensions is that you can learn from the experiences of last week via our comment sections and other reviews. This time around you'll have a clearer idea of what you're getting into, and don't say we didn't tell you so.

Today's RW Ext. lunch was at Il Mulino - even at 1:40, the place was busy so I took a seat at the bar. I walked away an hour later stuffed. Good mixed green salad, pappardelle with lamb sausage, and ESPECIALLY their tiramisu with homemade creme and zabaglione. Enjoyed the homemade bread too.

My only disappointment was the lack of extra "amuses," which I had read about in recent reviews: before the appetizer many people are servied fried zucchini, slices of salami, slices of cheese and a small bruschetta, along with a free glass of grappa at dessert. All I got was some a litle bit of cold "stew" (ragout? ratatouile?) of onions, tomatoes and squash, which I spread on the yummy bread. That's it! What, are those goodies only served to big-spender large parties who take up big tables at dinner & not order off the RW menu ?????

I went to 1789 with about six friends on Saturday night and was pretty disappointed. I went in January for RW and was really pleased so I don't know what the problem was. The service was painstakingly slow, it took us more than three hours to get through the three courses and not because we weren't hungry. I'm kind of bummed, I really liked it in January!

That list appeared to be missing Fourth Estate at the National Press Club (elevator signs at the National Press Building have been pimping the one week RW extension for a few weeks now).

Mie N Yu struck me as having great bathrooms, wonderful decoration and design, really average tasting foods and below average service.

I got the impression it's more a place to be seen eating than to actually eat.

Mie N Yu serves FOOD?

"What, are those goodies only served to big-spender large parties who take up big tables at dinner & not order off the RW menu ?????"

I think you answered your own question.
