Morning Roundup: August Arrival Edition

Well, it's August, D.C. Temperatures will be peaking, news will be slowing, and the non-workaholics among us will be fleeing the city for less sweltering vacation spots. We're not saying you ought to panic, exactly, but there are definite signs that Summer '07 may not be endless after all. Better get going on all that relaxing you had planned.

PG County Cop Indicted For Murder: Seven months ago two Marlo employees made a delivery to Cpl. Keith Washington's house, as the Post recounts. During the course of the delivery Washington shot both men; one died days later. Washington claims he acted in self-defense. The surviving victim says that Washington, whose record includes a number of complaints related to abuses of power, fired without provocation. It's been a while, but charges have finally been brought against Washington.

Everybody Loves Speed Cameras: Or at least everybody who works for local governments seems to. WJLA points out that D.C. is deploying mobile cameras along River Road. And NBC4 says that Gaithersburg is deploying cameras, too — although these are purely for encouraging safe driving, as any collected revenue will go back into public safety projects.

Free Produce On Rt. 50: Just lean out of the car and pick some up — it's not like you'll be busy driving. WTOP reports that a tractor trailer laden with fruit and/or vegetables rolled over on Route 50 in Maryland early this morning. One of the vehicles used to clear the accident then suffered a hydraulic malfunction, compounding the problem. Lanes have begun reopening, but it sounds like the situation is still a mess.

Briefly Noted: UMD researcher gets $15 million to work on AIDS vaccine... Construction begins on new D.C. high school... Montgomery County rolls back parking fee increase...

This Day In DCist: One year ago Metro was giving out free water and we were enjoying Cafe Berlin. Two years ago Rafael Palmeiro was getting suspended for steroids and we were picking a fight with Delaware.

Great article in metro section today about the multiple robberies at the LeDroit Park Market and all the efforts the community has made to support the owner.

More speed and red-light cameras in DC's residential neighborhoods, please! I'm tired of people speeding past my house- you just know many of them wouldn't drive so carelessly in their own neighborhoods. And the opportunity for DC to increase both safety and revenue at the same time is too good to pass up!

Where is the new high school located?

user-pic

Looks like the high school will be on Benning Rd., right next to Langston Golf Course.

I'm not sure why DCPS is building a new high school, while at the same time unloading properties it doesn't need. Couldn't they have located this program at the Franklin School, for example? I would think it fitting that a program on architecture would be located in such a beautiful building. At the very least it would be more fitting than continuing to use it as a homeless shelter.

they're not building a new high school from scratch. its an existing building that they are remodeling and adding an extension to. long overdue. the kids in that neighborhood desperately need projects like this over a $600 million baseball stadium.

Post 5:

What? The kids in that area won't be doing the construction and its a 'city-wide' school (magnet?) that won't necessarily have a ton of kids from the area. So I kind of don't get your "need projects" idea. Sounds like someone just hates baseball.

Oh god, NOT more speed and red light cameras!! If they had ANYTHING to do with safety, I'd be in favor, but DC and Lockheed Martin have done an outstanding job of identifying the places where they can make the most cash with these things -- which are, sadly, not AT ALL correlated with the places that have the greatest number of accidents.

The reality is, places where people routinely speed (e.g. rock creek parkway by the kennedy center, 16th Street) usually have unnecessarily low speed limits; and the places where people routinely run red lights are often complicated, badly-designed intersections, or have too short a yellow light for the speed limit, or other problems like no turn arrow where it's needed.

Show me any evidence that there are significantly more speed or red-light running related accidents at the places where these cameras have been put up, and we can talk. Otherwise, it's money grubbing. We should be fixing the reason why there are problems with speeding and red-light running - not simply taking advantage of it to make money.

Waaaahhhhh, baseball killed my high school, waaahhh.

Although I've had issues with Marlo Furniture's delivery servie (NEVER BUY FROM MARLO EVER!!!), Keith Washington had no right to shoot them.

I loathe Marlo. Words can't expalin how bad thier customer service and deleivery is.. but shooting them is wrong! I hope Washington serves major time.

Can we please stop with the 'baseball stadium took money from schools' crapola? DC schools have had money thrown at them in huge piles for decades. And, once again, the baseball stadium is being paid for by a special tax on large businesses only. It is NOT a tax on residents. And there's no chance in hell the large business community would have sat still for a similar tax to throw yet more huge piles of $$ at DC schools.

Good point about the Franklin School. Such a stunning waste of resources...... once again the city bowed to the political pandering instincts to use a magnificent structure on extremely pricey real estate for a homeless shelter. But, then, I guess that's easier for them than actually addressing homelessness head on. Still, such a waste.

Ag:

Marlo is so universally loathed that I would't be surprised to see this loser's defense team try to use that as some sort of 'mitigating circumstance' argument, at least subliminally.

They're going to have to move this trial away from DC. The defendant has far too many ties to the power structure locally.

I got a ticket from a camera mounted in the cop car thats always parked on North Capitol Street north of Michigan Ave.
The speed limit is 35.
It could easily be 45, as no one lives on that stretch of North Capitol, there aren't even sidewalks there.
It is not a safety issue.
Its just greed.
Or maybe just give people with Maryland plates tickets.

I'm just thinking that something is up with this dude since there is such a history of him losing his temper. Him and that "I miss my pants" judge -- how do these people get into positions of power in the first place?

Rhetorical question, really. I think I know the answer.

I hope DCPS will institute vocational high school programs in fields other than construction. Automobile service and many health- and computer-related fields do not require college, or could even feed into Associate (two-year) programs at UDC.

There's a light like a mile from Michigan going north on N. Capitol. How much time are you saving by going 45 vs. 35 on that stretch? A whole 23 seconds, and that incorrectly assumes you're doing the speed limit.

I must add that anyone who manages to get a ticket from a permanently-located speed camera is an idiot.

Couldn't agree more. Such a beautiful building, such a wasteful use (and, no, that's not a dig at the homeless population.) My wife and I walked by there a few weekends ago, and the garbage and rat infestation in the stairwell was unbelieveable. Possibly more rats than I have ever seen in one place. At the very least, if the building is going to continue to be used as a shelter, there shoudl be requirements for the upkeep of the building and grounds. The Central Union Mission at 14th and R is a great example--the building is clean, well-lit, and generally free of debris. Even the alley which runs behind it is well kept.
