San Diego Thinks It's Better Than Us. Again.

2007_0801_panda.jpgA begrudging Mazel Tov from DCist to the city of San Diego is in order, as the Associated Press reports that Bai Yun, the San Diego Zoo's female panda, is definitely pregnant. Bai Yun has been put on "24-hour birth watch" after officials detected a fetus and fetal heartbeat through ultrasound images on July 18. More tests confirmed the pregnancy and the zoo made an official announcement yesterday.

As you'll no doubt recall, Mei Xiang, the National Zoo's female panda, was artificially inseminated earlier this year by Gao Gao, San Diego's male panda, much to our (fabricated for the sake of humor) horror. But when her false pregnancy was revealed last month, it was with a mixture of sadness and relief that we reacted to the news -- sure, we would have loved to have a new panda cub, but at least we weren't getting some half-San Diegan bastard who would spend all his time surfing and trying to get that perfect tan. Tian Tian's sperm was good enough for Tai Shan, and it'll be good enough for the next adorable panda cub we're blessed with as well.

But now, we might just have to face facts. It looks like Gao Gao may actually be some kind of superpanda, having now fathered three of Bai Yun's cubs with his awesomely potent sperm. Dare we hope that it's just because Bai Yun is such a tramp? Sigh. We cannot stoop that low. You win this round, San Diego. But don't think you've seen the last of us. We'll get you if it's the last thing we do!

eh..you have to pay to get into the San Diego zoo..and then you have to wait in line to see the pandas

here we get to wait in line for free to see pandas (actually, is there still a line for the pandas here? i've not been in a while)

If you go before the schools get there at 10am or so, there is almost nobody watching the pandas.

I'm glad Mei Xiang didn't have to bear that out of town panda pimp's brat(s). Where is the outrage for panda reproductive rights? It's one thing to shoot her full of Tian Tian's spermatazoa. At least she met and had (unsuccessful) sex with him, so he got her "baby mama" seal of approval. It's another thing to try and force her to have this San Diegan's babies when she'd never even met him before. Maybe she wouldn't even like this Gao Gao character. Maybe he has b.o. or halitosis. Maybe he's sexually selfish and not attuned to her needs. Shouldn't she get a say in whose offspring she has to bear? Hell, not even the panda's have voting rights in DC.

Ya think we can convince the San Diego Zoo to name it Butterstick?

No wonder Bai Yun is pregnant. Check her out. MILF city. I'd tap it.

ENOUGH on the panda stories.

*More* panda stories!

Is there any doubt that the San Diego Zoo is better than the National Zoo? San Diego and Cincinnati have by far the best zoos in the nation, and the National Zoo lags far behind in terms of facilities and spaces for the accommodation of both animals and the public.
