This Week in Jazz
>> Along with Hugh Masekela, pianist Abdullah Ibrahim (pictured) is one of the most influential jazz musicians to come out of South Africa. A professional musician since 1949, Ibrahim has toured all over the world with his blend of jazz harmonies and traditional rhythms. Tonight this week's must-see comes to Blues Alley for an evening of solo piano performance. Sets are at 8 p.m. and 10 p.m and tickets are available online. $25 + $10 food/drink minimum.
>> One of our favorite local musicians, drummer Tony Martucci, a member of Three Stars alums The Jazz Update, brings his own group to Blues Alley on Thursday for 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. sets. Buy tickets here. $18 + $10 food/drink minimum.
>> Hailing from the Bay Area, The Mitch Marcus Quintet comes to Twins Jazz this Thursday. Call (202) 234-0072 for show time and cover information.
>> Celebrated vocalist Jane Monheit brings her crystalline voice to The Birchmere this Friday for a 7:30 p.m. concert. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster. $35 + obnoxious Ticketmaster surcharges.
>> Twins Jazz showcases a pair of fine local musicians this weekend. Lyle Link, who plays on Friday, can be heard on recordings of Washington pianists Allyn Johnson and Wayne Wilentz, trombonist/arranger Bobby Felder, and tenor saxophonist Tedd Baker. Link recently toured the Middle East with a group of international jazz musicians. Saturday's performer, Antonio Parker, is a Philadelphia native and graduate of Howard University. He is one of the area's under-rated players. Tickets to the 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. sets are available online. $15.
