Red Line Evening Commute Going to Suck. Hard.
Start making last minute happy hour plans immediately if your ride home includes the Red line. WMATA is reporting that there is no train service at either Bethesda or Medical Center due to a police situation. Shuttle bus service is up and running, but really, it's Thursday. Just go get a drink after work and wait for this crap to blow over. Super fun Red line delays should be expected in both directions.
NBC4 is reporting the police situation involved a foot chase on the tracks. Montgomery County police chased a wanted person on foot into the Bethesda station, and the person ran into the track bed, resulting in the closures and forcing authorities to turn off the third rail. We'll keep you posted.
UPDATE: The two stations were reopened just after 5 p.m. and service has been restored, but riders should still expect delays. No word yet on whether the suspect was captured.

Random comment/suggestion: would it be possible to timestamp your posts?
Metro just sent an e-mail alert a few minutes ago giving the all clear.
i'll second the timestamping idea. i think it's a simple and good idea.
Yes, timestamps please.
I agree...time stamping would be awesome. woo hoo.
I think it's unlikely we'd do that, but a) for things like this, I should really mention the time I'm writing it in the body of the post, so thanks for pointing that out and b) if you read us through RSS, the problem is solved entirely. Our feeds are full-text, y'all!
Yeah, I try to find timestamps all the time on these posts; I can't imagine what the cost of adding time to the by-line footer piece could possibly be. You know, "By Sommer Mathis at 00:00 ET in News"? You could at least mention it to the Gothamist overlords.
"It's unlikely we'd do that" ... why?
I have a few guesses, the mostly likely might be the inability for you guys (DCist crew) to change certain things about the site. Perhaps its all controlled by the Gothamist mothership at that level.
I could be wrong, but hey -- if that's the case, 'fess up. We'll go bug the right people.
If that isn't it, well, christ ... then someone is just being a shit.
Suck "hard" -- is that the right phrase? Isn't it suck "badly" (or "bad")...or even suck "big time"?
I am very annoyed at the Metro email alerts - it kept saying delays were minor, and at one time it said the problem was cleared (before it was), and then not. Metro Center was PACKED at 5, trains only ~10 min. apart, and PACKED when they pulled in. Travel times were slow and I was 45 minutes late for daycare pickup.
THANKS A LOT FOR THE ACCURATE DELAY WARNINGS METRO !!!!
