DCist Celebrates Three Years

2007_0907_birthday.jpgHappy Birthday to us! We here at DCist can hardly believe it's been three years since the official launch of this humble little web site, so we couldn't let the occasion pass by without the slightest amount of fanfare. It was three years ago today that founding editors Rob Goodspeed and Mike Grass first launched DCist, the fifth site in the -Ist empire, which now includes fourteen cities all over the world. What started as a labor of love with only five bloggers has since grown to supporting a full-time employee and almost 40 regular contributors. We've posted 8663 times over the last three years, and welcomed nearly 71,000 comments (well, welcomed might be too strong a word for some of our comment threads, but you know what we mean). You might also be interested to know that our most commented post ever was the rock throwing thread from this May, with 221 comments and counting.

We're working on putting together a special event for our readers to celebrate towards the end of this month, and will let you know all the details soon. This web site would certainly be nothing without all of you who spend your time here, debating the issues, being overly sensitive and correcting our typos. At the ripe old age of three, DCist salutes you, the commentariat. And of course, we salute ourselves. It is our birthday, after all.

Milkshakes for everyone!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DCIST!!!
We love and appreciate you.

Hooray DCist! Happy Birthday!

Happy Birthday, DCist! Don't worry -- you don't look a day over two.

Mazel tov, DCist. Can't wait for the bar mitzvah when you'll be a real website.

As for the "special event," can you pick a venue that's monkey-friendly? Y'know, bananas, tire-swing ropes, porn hair, hooker heels, BIG RED STRAPS, etc? PBR on tap always a plus.

Congrats! This is one of the only websites I try to read every day.

DCist needs more ice road truckers

Happy Birthday! I recently made DCist my homepage and haven't been disappointed.

Wow, 3 years old? That's getting up there. Pretty soon you'll be 5 and some of us will start leaving you for a younger, more exciting website with bigger tits.

But not me, DCist. I love you for your mind.

Woo-hooo! Happy B-day!

Couldn't make it through the day without you!

Hey DCist! Happy Anniversary! R U a girl?
R U single? Wanna go throw some rocks at people?
Kewl!

I want that dog!

And can I have a soy shake instead of a milkshake please?

Happy birthday! I can't belive it's been 3 years. Congrats on a great blog.

Don't know what I'd do without my DCist - does the first commenter on the 10,000th post get a prize? Keep them coming!

Well, technically, it was three years in late July, I think the 26th, when DCist was in "secret" beta. When my first post went live, I was living in a barely furnished basement apartment in McLean Gardens -- ahh, memories ... memories that I try to block from my head -- and I was wondering what the hell Goodspeed and I just started and didn't know what it would develop into. After I launched the Morning Roundup, my early a.m.'s have never been the same. Time for a nap in the original contributors' secret clubhouse in the Palisades.

Much love,
Mike Grass, now editor of readexpress.com

Well then, Mike Grass, you should be ridiculously proud of yourself. Not just for your awesome name, but cause DCist is damn awesome too. Kudos to you and everyone else who pitches in to make this a must-read part of the internets.

Your milkshake brings all the posts to the yard -- and damn right, they're better than yours.

Happy birthday, DCist! Thanks for everything you have done for me!

Even though I have move on to SFist territory, I still check in.

Have some tequila for me.

DottieboBottie

Awe look how you have grown.
