DCist Presents: Georgie James, The Dance Party, Soft Complex & DJ Will Eastman
Plan your naps accordingly, set your alarms, and stock up on your Red Bull, folks. The DCist, Blisspop and Brightest Young Things super duper 9:30 Club extravaganza is finally upon us! At the ripe old age of 3, we're wondering if we can still muster the energy for a show that starts at 11 p.m., but with the talents of DJ Will Eastman, Georgie James, The Dance Party and Soft Complex luring us towards 815 V Street, we think we can manage.
All of the aforementioned artists have graced DCist's pages in the past. Georgie James has played Unbuckled, DJ'd Unbuckled, and been discussed at length around these parts. Their full length Saddle Creek release, Places, is dropping on 9/25 and has found all sorts of praise around the internets, and from people who've ridden in my car recently. We've yet to see the lovely Ms. Burhenn and the wonderful Mr. Davis find a live crowd they couldn't make smile, and we're looking forward to more of the same.
DJ Will Eastman, one of our earliest Three Stars subjects, plays new, plays old, bounces between genres, and he's great at it. Here's what he told DCist Kyle about his approach in 2005:
How do you balance playing new material and the songs that everyone comes to hear?Ah, that’s the challenge! Anyone who’s stepped behind the decks knows what you’re talking about. You’ve alluded to the answer—at least from my own perspective—in your question: balance. I try to serve the audience, not preach to it. That means serving Clor, The Chalets and Voxtrot with Bloc Party, Junior Senior and Franz Ferdinand, which I do with no hesitation. After all, several years ago it was Junior Senior and Franz Ferdinand I had to serve with material people knew then. The first time I played Bloc Party at Bliss, in January 2004, it nearly cleared the floor. Hard to believe that happening now, but people needed to absorb it. By summertime, Bloc Party was kickin’.
He's also the purveyor of the Bliss dance nights, and Blisspop.com, a great resource for finding new music. Will will be providing the between-set tunes to keep you dancing tomorrow night.
The Dance Party's ethos is pretty well summed up in their name. They take the stage, usually dressed in threads from eras gone by and largely sauced, ready to make every person there have as much fun as they are. Here's what they told us about their live antics last year:
Have you ever gotten so crazy that you lose control, your grip on the show?Kevin: We ended up playing one night at 2 a.m. at Velvet Lounge. We were hammered and barely keeping shit together. I think I broke strings on three guitars. I was so pissed and caught up that I smashed one of my guitars on stage. It was my coolest rock and roll moment. Rob from Velvet was nice enough to let us keep playing.
Jeff: I went to the University of Maryland homecoming football game and started drinking at 10 a.m. I went to a bar and had about 85 shots. I blacked-out midday and passed out. Mick dragged me to the show and I was so fucked up that I had no idea what I was doing. It was great.
Danny: I had a habit for a while of throwing my bass across the stage at the end of the set because I would get so into the shows – until I busted Kevin in the head with my guitar.
Kevin: I was bleeding all over the place but it was cool because my hair looked punk-rock pink for the rest of the night.
Mick: The goal of our shows is to bring the music to the absolute breaking point. If we can do that, then the audience flips the fuck out and that's my absolute favorite part about being in a band. I've often sang in the audience or jumped in to dance. I tackled Kevin once and somebody stole his shoes.
Soft Complex is D.C.'s favorite new wave band. They've gotten some bluzz beyond their Three Stars appearance over the course of the past year too. Hey Will, listen up — here's what they told us will really get their feet moving on the dance floor:
SG: Moloko [a chorus of agreement], Daft punkRich: Faithless
MH: Spectrum, Donna Summer
CC: LCD Soundsystem, the new Madonna record is pretty awesome and after the 9:30 show I’m sold on Justin.
SG: I’d rather listen to Prince any day. Did you hear what he said about Justin Timberlake? He says “I didn’t know sexy went away."
If you're already a fan of these guys, or you've yet to have the pleasure, you should make it a point to join us on Saturday night at the 9:30 Club. 11 p.m., $10, 100% fun. For some more preview action on this weekend's main event, head over to BYT and see what they rounded up.

the "free hugs" thing makes me want to punch the BYT group in the face.
More than usual anyway.
Brightest Young Things is the hipster Late Night Shots.
this is worth the $10, BUT if you want something free...The Hosiery at 4th & Eye is donations, BYOB!! and has CRIMP YR HAIR DJ's from philly
Please don't punch me, I'm super wimpy. Let's just hug it out. Long awkward hugs and/or man pats for everyone!
Too much cross-blog cross-promotion! Makes me cross.
I'll definitely be there even though I'd rather have free Sparks than free hugs.
ugh, the dance party. they suck.
