Morning Roundup: Vying in Va., Malevolence in Md.

eclipse-like image by flickr user christakiGood morning, Washington. Does your commute include the Wilson Bridge? If so, enjoy this morning's trip — it's the last speedy one you're likely to have this week. As Fox 5 details, some of the traffic around the bridge will be redirected beginning at 10 a.m. this morning. But the worst will be saved for overnight on Friday, when traffic will be reduced to a single lane.

Hateful Vandalism Galore: What the hell is going on? On Monday it was a noose at UMD; yesterday we heard about vandalism at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. And today there's news of three Montgomery County synagogues being vandalized and a tire-slasher that targeted a muslim family in Gaithersburg (NBC4, WJLA). Topping things off, four teens have been charged with a hate crime and destruction of property in Charles County (NBC4).

Manassas Park Latino Festival Canceled: The Post explains that the small town known for its anti-anti-illegal-immigrant stance won't be holding its annual festival in celebration of Hispanic culture. Last year the festival had 40 sponsors; this year it attracted just five. Organizers say that businesses have been become wary due to recent anti-immigrant activism in the area. Some past sponsors disagree, saying that the city simply never contacted them this year.

Virginia Senate Race Speculation: Things seem to be heating up in the race to replace Virginia Senator John Warner, who announced his pending retirement twelve days ago. Yesterday the Washington Times examines Tom Davis's chances, noting the difficulty he may face in the state's more rural areas. Meanwhile, WJLA says that Democrat Mark Warner will be announcing some sort of candidacy on Thursday, although it's not clear if it'll be for the Senate or governorship.

Briefly Noted: FBI agent arrested for holding woman against her will in Arlington apartment... Man Snake bites (police) dog... Sheila Dixon to remain mayor of Baltimore (barring Democratic apocalypse)... Md. elementary students accidentally shown pornography...

This Day In DCist: One year ago it was election day in D.C. We were making predictions and lamenting an unfortunate end to the Skins' season opener. Two years ago the team fared better and Mayor Williams' blog was uncharacteristically active.

How is cutting out Israel out of a "we support israel" banner a hate crime? Seems politically motivated to me instead of hate driven.

I spotted a series of half-mast flags in Tysons Corner, coming into work. Did someone die?

The term hate crime is pretty broad.. which is one of the problems with the whole concept. Note that the article says "possible hate crime".

Also, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial incident has not yet been classified as vandalism by the authorities.
