Please Let Pat Buchanan Run For Va. Senate Seat

2007_0912_patbuchanan.jpgBloggers across this fair nation thought they couldn't get a bigger gift from a Virginia senate race than they did last year, after the epic and appalling Macacaness of Sen. George Allen's eventual defeat to Sen. Jim Webb. But via Wonkette, it would seem we could all have been wrong. Rumors are flying that Pat "Homosexuality is Not Only Immoral, but Filthy" Buchanan is considering a run at the seat being vacated by Sen. John Warner. It's Christmas come early!

Of course, there are plenty of other non-insane Republicans rumored to be throwing their hat in the ring, with much better chances of being taken seriously by oh, say, anyone. Rep. Tom Davis, one of the leaders of the D.C. voting rights movement, for one, and former Gov. Jim Gilmore for another. But the possibilities of a primary race filled with pitchfork and shotgun-laden photo ops is too delicious to dismiss. Take a look at some of Pat's most famous quotes throughout the ages -- they make "macaca" sound like something you'd call an adorable five year-old girl in pig tails.

>> On AIDS, in 1983: "The poor homosexuals -- they have declared war upon nature, and now nature is extracting an awful retribution."

>> On the South before the Civil War, in 1993: "The War Between the States was about independence, about self-determination, about the right of a people to break free of a government to which they could no longer give allegiance. How long is this endless groveling before every cry of 'racism' going to continue before the whole country collectively throws up?"

>> On the methods used to kill thousands of Jews at Treblinka, in 1990: "Diesel engines do not emit enough carbon monoxide to kill anybody."

>> From his 1988 book, Right from the Beginning: "The real liberators of American women were not the feminist noise-makers, they were the automobile, the supermarket, the shopping center, the dishwasher, the washer-dryer, the freezer."

Meanwhile, former Democratic Gov. Mark Warner looks set to announce he will run for the seat tomorrow.

I relish the notion of a post "solid south" that has two Democrats in the senate. So much for the lasting majority eh??

You laugh (well I laugh a little too) but with his conservative bonafides locking up the south, his virulent anti-immigration position might win him a lot more votes in the "metropolitan" north than we'd like to admit.

I doubt he could win against a popular ex-governor like Mark Warner (but really, isn't every politician in Virginia an ex-governor?). But grinding the anti-immigration axe* would make it a lot closer than you'd think. I sure as hell wouldn't vote for him, but I do recognize that the immigration issue is huge right now, and deep down I bet a lot of people secretly (or not so secretly) agree with his position enough to let it sway their vote in the privacy of the voting booth.

Again, he's probably too much of a self-parody at this point to win, but I bet it'd be close.

*And you got to hand it to him, he's no johnny-come-lately to the anti-immigration band-wagon. He's been riding that pony since before the Irish were "white".

Buchanan will be 70 on election day. He ain't running. And every Republican knows that running against Warner will be like running against a Bush in Texas.

so yeah, he may have said some wacky things in the past and he might be old, but he's great on Tucker with Bill Press!

As if Buchanan would have a prayer of securing the Republican nomination even if he did run! He's been railing against mainstream Republican policies for almost 20 years, and definitely hasn't been on the "inside" in that party for a long time. The machine would certainly find someone who could take him down (i.e., Tom Davis), even if that person might not have a prayer against Mark Warner.

The real question is: Does anyone think he rises beyond the level of comi/tragic?

One point overlooked, however, is that Buchanan would be the single most anti-war candidate in the race. And he could very well run his whole campaign about the war, and Democrat "cowardice" in opposing it, which would make for an interesting contest. I don't think he'll run though, and I hope he doesn't.

The real question is: Does anyone think he rises beyond the level of comi/tragic

no. he's a whack job that has about as much chance of getting the Republican nomination in Virginia as I do. He's a loon.

Despite a few of the ignorant and emotionally charged comments above me, Patrick Buchanan is a great American, and would have been a terrific president. The man has character, a great knowledge of history, a brilliant mind, and guts. I doubt he'll run, the country and the state of Virginia has passed him by. That's a compliment to him, and a sad testament to the anti-Christian times we now live in.
