If they were to open WaWa's in the city I think they'd really take off. Having lived in Philly, I really miss them. Their sandwiches are the bomb and the biggity.
The Whitman Blogger guy is a total nutcase. How embarassing for the people that live there to have him holding himself out as speaking for the residents.
I can not belive WAWA is closing! This is literally THE worst news in this city all year. Seriously.
Christ, people. There's a WaWa in Bowie, a 35 minute drive from College Park. Faster if you drive like you've got diarrhea, which is what you'll get from their subs anyway.
Wawas rock. You could get a sub, Enquirer, and slurpee and your afternoon was set. Despite being a student there I never knew there was one in College Park - and now it's leaving. C'est la vie!
monkey--your comments make my day!
wawa is sooo overrated. people, get over it.
Wawa's subs are still better than Subway, but that's like saying bone cancer is better than lymphatic cancer.
Mangialardo's FTW!
WaWa is good. REAL good. But definitely not worth driving from DC to f*#@ing Bowie. If they opened one WaWa for every Potbelly's, or replaced every 7-Eleven with one, it would be perfect. Seriously, DC is missing out.
Does anyone know what the future of the row houses pictured above in Georgetown is?
Since GU is moving their business school out of the car bar down the street, there may be some redevelopment of that block in the plans?

fr CNN:-- For 11 years, Pedro Zapeta, an illegal immigrant from Guatemala, lived his version of the American dream in Stuart, Florida: washing dishes and living frugally to bring money back to his home country. An illegal immigrant, he managed to save $59,000 while working as a dishwasher for 11 years.
Two years ago, Zapeta was ready to return to Guatemala, so he carried a duffel bag filled with $59,000 -- all the cash he had scrimped and saved over the years -- to the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.
But when Zapeta tried to go through airport security, an officer spotted the money in the bag and called U.S. customs officials.
"They asked me how much money I had," Zapeta recalled, speaking to CNN in Spanish.
He told the customs officials $59,000. At that point, U.S. customs seized his money, setting off a two-year struggle for Zapeta to get it back.
Zapeta, who speaks no English, said he didn't know he was running afoul of U.S. law by failing to declare he was carrying more than $10,000 with him. Anyone entering or leaving the country with more than $10,000 has to fill out a one-page form declaring the money to U.S. customs.
ELEVEN YEARS IN THE USA AND CAN'T SPEAK A WORD OF ENGLISH. SHOULD HE GET A PASS BECAUSE HE CAN'T (OR DIDN'T ATTEMPT) TO SPEAK ENGLISH?
The WaWa closing story has been in the Diamondback since Monday or Tuesday. I guess nobody reads The Diamondback.
I wonder where all of the College Park, Hyattsivlle and Riverdale firefighters will hang out when the WaWa is gone.
Those buildings are part of the Georgetown Historic District. Any exterior alteration requires approval of the Commission of Fine Arts and the Historic Preservation Review Board. Two rigorous processes. Additions on the rear might be possible, but the likelihood of changes to the front or top of the buildings is extremely low.
The Whitman is full of crazy people. Definitely check out that link.
I second 14's recommendation. That blog is a train wreck.
Oh wow. That Whitman blog is incredible. Passive-aggressive to the max, with a little bit of Dr. Bronner-esque crazy thrown in.
There's, like, another Wawa opening every other day in Virginia, it seems. Would be nice if there were one inside the beltway, but oh well. Their sammiches are cheap, but I've honestly had better. Not that I won't miss it - but I much prefer their cherry soda.
Also, regarding Pedro Zapeta: no one cares.
