About Tonight

>> Following on the heels of MC Hammer and salsa legend Willie Colon, rock 'n' roll pioneer and TV commercial pitchman Little Richard brings his falsetto scream to a free outdoor concert, with openers D.C. female soul vets, the Jewels. 7 to 9 p.m. at at Woodrow Wilson Plaza, 1300 Pennsylvania Ave.

>> Emmanuel Jal, a "lost boy of Sudan" who is the subject of his own upcoming documentary, War Child, will perform his socially-conscious rap tonight at Ibiza. Tickets are $15, doors open at 6:45 p.m. for a 7:30 show. All proceeds go to Gua Africa, a nonprofit organization building schools in Sudan. Read more about Emmanuel Jal's story here.

>> Love Van Morrison (and who doesn't?) but wish he didn't always suck so hard in live performance? The Arlington Cinema and Draft House has the solution, with a Van Morrison Tribute tonight at 8 p.m. $12 gets you in the door for enough Van Morrison cover bands to send you deep into a Moondance.

>> Tickets are still available to see Metric at the 9:30 Club. We reviewed their show at the same venue last year, so check it out and plop down $20 to catch them tonight with Crystal Castles. 7:30 p.m. doors.

Anyone know where to see some good live blues here in DC?

Matt - The Zoo Bar (by the zoo, shocker) has a lot of live blues, including a fun open mic night most Thursdays.

Why isn't the metric show sold out? Anyone care to explain that to me?

#3 - there is some damned fine music around town tonight. Gruff Rhys is playing the Rock n' Roll Hotel, and the Mountain Goats are playing the Black Cat. I don't have anything against Metric particularly, but these are tough choices for the indie rock crowd on a thursday night.

GO SEE CRYSTAL CASTLES!
but that ticket price kind of sucks

Could you describe the music styles of the Mountain Goats and Gruff Rhys?

Matt - my 2 cents:

Mountain Goats - white guy with acoustic guitar folk rock, only better. he doesn't apologize for being that guy. the music is primarily a vehicle for well-crafted narrative poetry. (man, that doesn't even shound like i like the mountain goats. i do. one of my favorite bands ever.)

Gruff Rhys - This is the guy in Super Furry Animals, but I'm not terribly familiar with either. Superficially cutesy, psychedelic pop rock with eclectic influences.

You can easily turn up a myspace for either one or some mp3s on the hype machine.

Metric plays great music, but Emily Haines lets her loathing for the U.S. come through far too much. An attraction for some, I'm sure; but a major detraction for others.
