Morning Roundup: Not Actually August Edition

Good morning, Washington. It's almost October, but in many ways it still seems like summer. For one thing, it'll be ninety degrees today. For another, there's news of Michael Vick's worsening legal situation. Yesterday Virginia indicted him and three others on dogfighting charges. Of course, we all knew that was coming sooner or later — less expected was word that a Canadian bank is suing Vick for defaulting on a $2.3 million loan.

Potential Fare Hike Gets Smaller: Good news from Metro chief John Catoe: the Post says that he's revising downward his proposed increase in subway, bus and parking fees. The increase in minimum subway fare would now range between 20 and 40 cents, depending on when it goes into effect. Catoe's earlier proposal would have raised that number by 45 cents.

Radio One To Return To D.C.?: Via NBC4, the AP reports that the largest urban radio group in the country may be moving back to the District. Radio One, which owns seventy stations, moved to Lanham, Md. a decade ago. Now they're eyeing a spot by the Shaw Metro — but are expecting the D.C. government to provide some financing for the move.

Grave Robbers In Charles County: Alright, that's a bit sensationalistic — gravesite robbers is more like it. WTTG reports that a cemetary in Charles County suffered a robbery over the weekend. Over 100 bronze vases were severed from the chains that attached them to grave markers. Authorities think that the objects were stolen for their value as scrap metal.

Briefly Noted: Pepper spray accidentally unleashed at Walker Jones Elementary... D.C. Teacher wins $25,000 national award... Johnson says he was unaware that troubled cop/former aide had been declared unfit for duty... Cheney visits bookstore, no fatalities reported...

This Day In DCist: One year ago we were interviewing Soft Complex and debating how many liquor licenses Dupont ought to have. Two years ago Cindy Sheehan was getting arrested and Q And Not U split up.

i was in the check out lane when cheney came in to the store. count me among the really surprised that he'd actually venture out among the little people. everyone in the store just kind of quietly stared, though the clerk who was cashing me out was hoping that he wouldn't have to be the one to deal with cheney...

This is the third time the word "unleashed" has been used to describe the pepper spray incident. It was also used on TV last night, and on the radio this morning. The word seems a bit melodramatic/hyperbolic to describe what was probably the spraying of a gentle mist of the irritant. Maybe "released" rather than unleashed? I'd save the word unleashed for use regarding packs of guard dogs or a hail of bullets. Sorry, got up on the wrong side of the bed this morning...

That Radio One story was reported in WaPo yesterday. Don't all the DCists live in Shaw?

I thought Radio One coming to DC was old news. As far as I know, they've been looking for that spot off of U St. for a while. I think they're planning to make it so one of the studios looks out onto the street.

Looks like DC and Chevy Chase aren't the only victims of scrap metal thieves. But damn, messin with graves is pretty low. These guys would steal Tiny Tim's crutch.

Now, if we could only get them to steal the fugly rooftop decks and cars double parked around Shiloh.

If Tiny Tim's crutch was made from solid copper, I'd steal the damn thing too. Have you seen metal prices?

The fare increase for the metro my be smaller but the bus increase remains at 1.25 going up to 1.50 Eff that Ess.

I think Radio One is looking at the old Hostess Factory on S Street. That is what was discussed at the Shaw town meeting.

I see Catoe went to the W School of Budgeting.. come out with a high preliminary estimate, then revise it downward, and ta-da, you've solved the problem!

Anyone have a lead on a bar that's showing the women's world cup semi-final tomorrow morning?

Damn...taking dead folks' stuff is cold, cold, cold. Hard to believe this is what we've come to.

"Damn...taking dead folks' stuff is cold, cold, cold. Hard to believe this is what we've come to."

This has been going on for centuries; have you ever been in the British Museum?

"Damn...taking dead folks' stuff is cold, cold, cold. Hard to believe this is what we've come to."

O RLY?

I hope you've never been to an exhibit featuring Sarcophagi or other such related paraphanelia.

Well, there's a difference between looting ancient tombs in the name of science and desecrating graves for scrap metal. The former results in you being portrayed by Harrison Ford; the latter, in prison rape. Although, in these crazy times, the distinction between the two has become a fine one indeed.

In the name of science? How about in the name of glory?
