Out and About: Weekend Picks

FRIDAY:

>> Howard University alum Eric Roberson performs tonight at the Black Cat along with Emily King. Doors open at 9 p.m. $17.

>> It's pretty much the end of times: Vanilla Ice will be at Foggy Bottom bar McFadden's tonight, "drinking, partying, and hosting the night" starting at 10 p.m. $5 Jager bombs and $2 Bud and Bud Light bottles are little enticement to make this event anything more than laughable, but maybe if you're drunk enough, it'll be funny ha-ha instead of funny sad.

SATURDAY:

2007_09_27_walkingtown%282%29.jpg>> Don't forget to head out to one of Cultural Tourism DC's free walking tours during the fall WalkingTown DC event. Check out our previews of several tours on offer and the full schedule for complete details. Tours leave at different times and locations all throughout the city -- and photographers, make sure to bring your cameras to enter in the photo contest.

>> This year Greater Brookland celebrates the 80th Anniversary of the very first Brookland Festival, held in 1927 to celebrate the paving of 12th Street NE. Head out for a street festival, parade and eclectic mix of live jazz and blues to celebrate with the neighborhood.

>> It's time once again for the National Book Festival, an all-day affair that's usually as exhausting as it can be rewarding for book lovers. Check out our guide to making the most of it.

2007-07-11_LeLoup-1.jpg>> If you for some reason you missed Le Loup at our summer edition of Unbuckled, shame on you. Make it up to them to stopping by their big CD release bash at Black Cat, with These United States and Thao Nguyen & The Get Down Stay Down, $10, 9 p.m.

>> Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth is at The Rock and Roll Hotel along with opener Christina Carter. 9:30 p.m., $15.

>> The Borf Brigade's rather awesome arts venue in Bloomingdale, which they're calling the Bobby Fisher Memorial Building, will host The Apes and These Are Powers. 1644 North Capitol St. NW If you've been a fan The Apes regular shows at The Hosiery, this one's for you.

SUNDAY:

>> The "official Latin American festival of D.C.", FiestaDC, takes over Mt. Pleasant from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Parade, live music, etc., etc.

>> Crafty Bastards is back. Check out our full preview, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Marie Reed Learning Center at 18th St. and Wyoming Ave. NW. Rain or shine. Admission is Free.

I feel like opening my Y2K stash again upon reading about Vanilla Ice "hosting" an event at McFadden's. I'm sure GWU students will "relive" their toddler years with the Ice in full effect. Truly sad...

Don't forget about the Ladybug Transistor show at DC9 on Sunday!

The Roots and Big Daddy Kane are at the 9:30 club tonight at 11, also

NOTHING about those rich white assholes in the Borf Brigade is awesome, unless you love their racial and ethnic condescension toward people of color who don't live in McLean, VA like them.

period.

For the record, anyone who didn't see the Lucksmiths st DC9 tonight missed the hell out.
