Introducing DCist Avatars
Over the weekend, Gothamist introduced comment profile avatars to our registered user system. If you have a profile (and if you don't yet, head over here to register), just go to "Edit Profile" and upload a 100 x 100 pixel image. Then try commenting (on this post!), and bask in the glory of our ever-improving commenting system. The default icon for registered users across the Gothamist network is an adorable baby panda, of which we of course approve, but you won't want to be some faceless drone in a sea of Buttersticks for too long. Upload those avatars today!
Please note: For some of you, the new avatars might look totally weird and bad at first -- it happened to me over the weekend. To get them looking right, try refreshing your CSS. There may be a few bugs still to be worked out in the system as well, so if you notice anything really odd while you're uploading your avatar, please let us know in comments so we can pass them on to the folks in New York.
We know you'll let us know what you think in the comments no matter what, so have at it.

I uploaded my avatar without problems; it appears on my profile page but not with my comments - they still show that weasel you insist is a baby panda.
When I click on my name or the weasel near my comments, I get my profile page, complete with the correct avatar.
I've refreshed but that doesn't seem to clear this up.
[Let's see if the weasel pops when I submit this . . .]
Hey Mike, I see your avatar just fine in comments. Thanks for trying it out! And I assure you, it's not a weasel.
Glad it's working. The sight of that beastie was creeping me out. Photoshop in some dark glasses for him or something . . .
Testing...
Curses!
Don't worry Rusty, it's working! I see your LSS avatar no problem. Seems like maybe it's taking a little while for them to show up for most users. I'd recommend patience and refreshing.
I have been commenting as a guest ever since you started the comments system. But the panda got me to register!
Thanks, DCist!
I can't wait to see what MonkeyErotica's avatar will be. No doubt something profane.
I have an office pool that Monkey's avatar will be something phallic. Yes, we don't have lives. Your tax dollars at work.
testing, testing, 3, 2, 1...
So far, so good.
But dying to see Monkey's avatar now.
Lol. I can't wait to see what some of those residents over at The Whitman Condo Blog use as their images? Lions and yaks fighting to the death?

I was thinking the exact same thing Moose...
What will be the default avatar for guest commenters? May I suggest the Cowardly Lion, or perhaps some animal with a yellow belly?
My guess on Monkey's avatar is that talking poop from South Park. Anyone else care to hazard a guess?
Guests don't get an avatar at all.
I get this error when trying to upload an image:
Movable Type
An error occurred:
Can't call method "crop" on an undefined value at /home/httpd/local/mthost/blogs.gothamistllc.com/httpdocs/mt/plugins/Profile/profile_avatar.pl line 121.
For an avatar, I was about to go for a goatse-cum-tubgirl motif, but try crowbarring that into 100x100 pixels. My eyesight's bad enough as it is, what with all the self abuse and backalley Lasik treatments.

fixed..fyi everyone, it doesn't like *.tiff files.
Is there a way to turn off the display of avatars?
I know some people will really like this feature but I prefer just to read what other people have to say. And yes, at some point, I will upload something so that everyone doesn't have to see a million pandas.
timfry, there isn't right now, but I'll mention it to the guys who handle this for us, maybe it's an option at some point.
I think I've had an avatar for a while...but let's test.
interesting,I uploaded something a while back. Lets see if this works.
How come I get "There was an error: Unknown user" whenever I try to edit my profile, or even click on it, for that matter?
Carmelotto, to the rescue!
I'm a fan of mine. It makes me happy.
I wonder what my avatar looks like. It will probably make me angry.
