Morning Roundup: Drenched and Delayed Edition

Good morning, Washington. The weather-related headlines today are all generally pretty disappointing -- The Post proclaims that "Rain Likely to Dampen Area But Not Douse the Drought", and others have followed suit. But waving like a lone reed in the pessimistic sands of weather prognostication is CapitalWeather.com, who just minutes ago put up a prediction, based on a brand new model, suggesting that "several factors are finally lining up to bring the potential for several inches of drought-busting rain over the next 60 hours." Of course, a five month-long drought will necessarily have long-term effects in spite of this current downpour, but we'd still recommend getting out your galoshes, D.C.
Oh Yeah, What About Those Fare Hikes: Not that we've actually forgotten, but the delay tactics and overall slow going of the Metro Board when it comes to the inevitable fare hike have put the matter on the backburners of our minds. It's certainly worth remembering though that the Board is meeting again today to discuss fares, and the Examiner rightly paints the current deadlock as a product of differing priorities between D.C. and its suburbs. We'll follow up if anything comes out of today's meeting.
Church Planned at Uptown Hits Snags: You'll recall the frenzy that ensued when rumors that the Uptown Theater in Cleveland Park would close to make way for a megachurch, but of course that turned out not to be true. The McLean Bible Church planned only to hold services in the theater on Sunday mornings, with the rest of the theater still operating as usual. The Post reports that not even those modest plans may pan out for the church, however, as D.C. zoning officials have ruled that the church would need a special permit to operate in the historic movie theater, a setback which will surely delay its plans to begin services in January.
Briefly Noted: Hyattsville man arrested in fuel tanker hijacking ... Pedestrian struck and killed in Southwest Wednesday night ... Georgia Ave. closed for suspicious package ... Metrobus driver seriously injured on I-395.
This Day in DCist: In 2006 we were worrying about another round of rock throwing, in 2005 we chatted up We Are Scientists, and in 2004 we took a closer look at the controversial logo for the city of Arlington.

I wouldnt call any plan that calls for hundreds of suburban cars blocking resident cars 'modest'.
The metrobus driver died...
I was willing to give the church the benefit of the doubt and not go along with the godless expresso-swillers aghast at the use of an empty theater for anything but the exact same movie for 6 months on end, but then I read this nugget:
"I should have known that Satan wasn't going to take this lying down," Solomon told the congregation in a recent sermon. "We're going to fight, and we're going to let the Lord Jesus open the door."
I think this is totally inaccurate. We all know that the only DC government agency that Satan operates through is the DMV and the Taxicab Commission. The Office of Zoning is merely run by Cerberus, with the help of several lesser demons.
Well death is a pretty seriously injury.
"I should have known that Satan wasn't going to take this lying down,"
I'm pretty sure that was a misquote. He didn't say "Satan" he said "Stan" as in Stan Moskowitz, the zoning board director.
And I have it on good authority that Satan does indeed take these things "lying down," as reverse cowgirl is His preferred position. C'mon, all the fun and none of the work? Which line would you be in?
"I wouldnt call any plan that calls for hundreds of suburban cars blocking resident cars 'modest'."
The suburban cars visit the church in McLean or the location at the Rosslyn Spectrum. The Uptown location would be for residents of DC that live near the theater or can metro to Cleveland Park. You won't be seeing many VA or MD cars attending the proposed Uptown services.
"You won't be seeing many VA or MD cars attending the proposed Uptown services."
What's the point of attending services if I can't drive in from Maryland in my pearlescent Escalade with tinted windows and a personalized "FRMJESUS" license plate? Do such Christians exist?
Aren't there a gazillion churches in this hood already? Are they really expecting 800 churchgoers from within walking distance? Saying their customers will take the metro is simply laughable. Ain't going to happen.
For the record, this drought has been around for longer than five months, and water levels will continue to drop if an effective planning system isn't put into place.
ibc - You forgot the doubleparking. Jeebus didn't give you that Escalade for you to park legally.
Also, whatever you do, DO NOT place a small pebble between the tire hose cap and the little metal air release, causing air to SLOWLY leak out over several hours, long after the doubleparked car has left your neighborhood.

I prefer a friendly reminder like this...
