    The Weekly Feed: Tapas-Sized Edition

City Paper really needs to pay employees more
This blog post from City Paper's Jessica Gould seems to imply that perhaps City Paper is not paying its employees quite enough. Recalling The Simpsons episode, "Lisa Gets an A", Gould discusses going to Whole Foods with the purpose of compiling a lunch entirely from the free samples. As she went for a sample, one of the employees "caught her in the act." I'm all about the free samples, but seriously. If you're going to play, play to win. Or at least pretend you're going to buy something.

    Better than trick or treating
Jason Andelman of Artisan Confections in Arlington will be holding an open house from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. this Saturday. This includes free tastings of some of his new confections. Fleur de sel caramels and fresh mint chocolates sound incredibly yummy. And you won't even need a costume.

    Taco Tuesday
You can thank Jacoby Ellsbury, center fielder for the Red Sox, for your free taco. Going with the Steal a Base Steal a Taco promotion, Taco Bell will be giving out free hard shell beef tacos on Tuesday, October 30 from 2-5 p.m. Hopefully you can cut out of work to grab one, since they conveniently decided to schedule it after lunch time. And of course, this entire giveaway presupposes anyone would want to eat a Taco Bell taco, free or not, in the first place.

    Smaller Bites
    Last call for Oktoberfest
All the Oktoberfest celebrations should be wrapping up this weekend. Head over to the Saloon on Sunday for their special Oktoberfest menu. Choose from a huge variety of wursts. If you want some very German street food, go for the currywurst - wurst covered in curry ketchup with fries.

Rustico is having another celebration on Saturday. Their Oktobeerfest raises money for SCAN (Stop Child Abuse Now) and will feature 12 different types of Oktoberfest beers and food from the chefs at Tallula, Vermillion, Evening Star Cafe and others.

    Openings Roundup
Marvin from Thievery Corporation's Eric Holmes (2007 14th St. NW) is serving up a unique combination of items that include moules frites and fried chicken and grits. Any restaurant named after Marvin Gaye has gotta be pretty sweet.

Hudson Restaurant in the old David Greggory space, (2030 M. St NW) is serving up variety at brunch, lunch and dinner. The menu includes smoothies, burgers, fried chicken, moules frites amongst other items. One huge perk? They serve food until 2 a.m.

The Park at 14th (920 14th St. NW) is opening on November 1. With the top two floors dedicated to a lounge and a DJ, it'll be adding one more restaurant/club to an area that already includes Lima and Lotus Lounge.

Veranda is serving Mediterranean fare on the east side of Logan Circle (1100 P Street NW). The opening is still somewhat soft but brothers Aleks and Lambros Duni began welcoming the neighborhood to their family restaurant in the middle of this week.

Maybe if you had read, like, the first paragraph of that entry you would've seen this: I have to go to Whole Foods anyway. I can eat there. Uhm, she was buying something and if you shop at WF you certainly can't complain about not getting paid enough.

Thanks for the Rustico headsup. Joint's been my loiterbar du jour for a couple weeks, but sounds like Saturday will be a fustercluck. I'll go for Plan B: Carlo Rossi spritzers and takeout from Al's Cheesesteaks.

Monkey - I wonder how many times you and I have been in the same place at the same time, 'cause you and I seem to be culinary brothers from different mothers. If you cop to frequenting the Eastern Market branch of Murky or Sidamo on H St. I'm gonna plotz.

Nix on Murky. I havent bought OTC coffee in DC since Swings moved next to the White House. But if its cheep, greasy, and filling, I'm all over it like stink on rice. I'm just hoping the new Matchbox on 8th can beat Ugly Mug in the miniburger department, which should be about as difficult as beating an amputee at hopscotch.

I'm so sick of hearing about the Taco Bell giveaway during the World Series game, that I'm going to pick up my freebie and smack it on down on the counter, splattering taco sauce all over the place, just to teach them a lesson.

When I was working at the USPTO and the Whole Foods opened up on King Street a group of us would go over there for free samples during lunch. The place was a madhouse during opening week, but it was a lot of fun and I still remember the delicious pineapple I had there. I don't think we were ripping off the store because one of us would inevitably break down and buy an $8 energy bar or something.

Harris Teeter does free samples as well. However, it's usually just stale baguette slices, cream cheese and Lipton's Onion Soup mix, and condemned turkey lunchmeat cubes. This does not in any way deter people from scarfing down this stuff because it's FREE.
